This service seems to have some interest amongst stock photographers who like to trace use of their work. TinEye image search engine |

I applied for an invite. Is there any cost? Or are we at the beta phase right now?

From what I have heard, at present, no cost. I also applied for an invite as I was too late for the open... |

Oh man, that site gives me headaches. I fed it one of my images and 15 results with the image stolen popped up.

I've been waiting for something like this! Awesome. (I often find fascinating images without any credits or additional info; this will help figuring out where they come from - and possibly finding more stuff I like.)
I wonder what their algorithm does. It seems to calculate a "summary" of each image and can then determine distances between summaries, right? If anyone knows more about the math, thanks for explaining or sending links. |

I got my approval this morning and have been playing around with it. The firefox plugin makes it as easy as right-clicking on an image and choosing a Tineye search as an option. Very nice.
It didn't find any copies of any of my immensely popular and often stolen images on the web, so for fun, I searched for Shannon's immortal:
and found a copy on this French Blog.
Now I know Shannon's image has been stolen at least 10,000 times so finding one is not that impressive, but an image search capability like this has tremendous potential. I like it!

What do they do with the images submitted to them? Do they store them?

I imagine the answer is much like "what does Google do with web pages submitted to it." It indexes them. It runs is algorithmic magic so that very fast searches can be done. The only thing I can find in their FAQ is:
"To date, TinEye has indexed 486,637,255 images from the web. TinEye crawls new images from the web on a regular basis, so this number is always increasing."

I got my "acceptance" yesterday- they like me they really like me!!!- anyway, last night when I started playing with Tineye they said 485 million images, my most recent search said 488 million images. Man, am I bored today.

Got my approval this morning... played around a little, and installed the Firefox plugin. I think it has tremendous potential if they do get a large fraction of the web's images indexed. |

Just signed up, this thing is great!!! I just run a search on my zombie image (the version from the tutorial) and it bought up LOADS of hits. It seems a lot of people are using it for their Avatar on various sites.. this is my favourite version..

Found my original Tooth fairy shot on a russian site with the heads replaced and an Iranian site. It's probably not safe for me to travel to Iran now. |
