I have a buddy who currently has the Canon Powershot G3 and loves it. It does exactly what he needs. Unfortunately, he has a bit of a tremor in his hands which has been getting worse of late, and he is interested in upgrading to something with IS to see if that helps prevent the motion blur he is seeing in a lot of his pics.

Do you guys have any recommendations? He would like to stay with Canon, needs IS, doesn't need RAW, would like some reach if possible.

Also, anyone have any thoughts on a reasonable resale value for the used G3 if he decides to upgrade?

Canon G9?

Have you checked Ebay for recently completed auctions of G3's

It does seem like the G9 or the S5 IS would be the way to go. Anyone have experience with one and/or the other? How well does the IS really work?

I have the S5 and love it. My highest scoring photo so far was taken with it. I have not done any comparisons with IS off and on, however. The major shortcoming of the S5 is the same thing as all small sensor cameras, that being low light performance.

I don't have any samples to show, but I did experiment with the IS on and off on my S2 and found a noticable difference. And I miss its zoom and supermacro!

I'll see if I can get a couple shots now for your comparison.

I have the G7 and my dad has the G9. With a few exceptions, they are pretty much the same. It's the closest thing to a DSLR in terms of functionality without actually being a DSLR. Its biggest weakness, IMO, is that it uses the same itty bitty noisy sensor that other Canon PnS cameras use.

Same with the S3 IS.

But the 12x (36-412mm) zoom, Super-Macro mode (minimum focus distance = 0cm), and flip/tilt screen are really helpful features.

Fantastic stuff, all. Thanks a bunch for your input.

What shutter speed were those test shots at, Sheila?

I own the G9 and agree with Spazmo that it has pretty much all functionability of a DSLR. It does reasonably well at 400 ISO but beyond that I hope you like grain, though that is the case with all P&S, at least canon that is. The nice thing about it is that it is smaller than the S3 & S5 and can be squeezed into a pocket if need be. It also has Raw capability which the S-series do not and has a hotshoe mount for the canon flashes, though so does the S5. It's a cool little camera that gives you a lot of flexibility and has the video mode as well. It is a bit more money than the S3 & S5 and if he doesn't need the raw ability then it might be smarter to go with the S5.

Btw, those were taken from my kitchen of the yard at the far side of the cul-de-sac.
