And the winner is, RA

Perfectly round and framed sun. Nice exposure, nice color too. 10, and again 10 10 10...

but, hey, that's what "I" think :P

(Thanks to yanko for giving me the idea to make it colored instead of BW which I originally was thinking)

It has bugged me ALL day! But I cannot say I found it as 'pleasant' as you seem to have.

Well, I find it a positive sign that people are willing to expand their ideas as to what meets the challenge definition. It is surely a stunning image, where the "wow factor" is largely due to the directly-visible rays of the sun, even though the solar disk itself is obscured. Perhaps this is not the best example of where image quality really ought to over-ride description literalism, but I hope it's a sign of a coming trend towards supporting people "taking risks" with their entries.

Oh, so that means any outdoor daytime photo would have fit? Because the sunlight would have been visible.
Silly me, when I read "Sun in Frame" I actually assumed you were supposed to show the sun in the frame, not just the light produced by it! Good thing I didn't vote, eh? :)

Politically correct, yes, you are right. Although, if I take strait down photo of ground at midnight, and say "Sun is in frame, but earth is covering it" that also would be correct? no?

The sun is completely there...full circle. Above the building and below the cloud line.

You cannot see any part of the solar disk -- the angle and width of the sun rays show that the sun is completely obscured by the dark band of clouds.

As I say, I find it a pleasant surprise because I myself would consider the sun-rays to meet the challenge, while I was anticipating the DNMC literalists to absolutely require seeing the solar disk itself.

Woooooot.

I thought we were talking about the first place... which started a few posts ago... I have no problem with second place, he was gone because of the date.

I don't think so -- I think you are seeing a reflection off the bottom of the clouds. Again, I'm not saying that I would have considered it DNMC, just that I was expecting more of that reaction from the voting populace.

Double woooot!

I thought you guys were discussing the image that was DQ'd...the one that this thread started with. :-/

If I'm on the same page now, I'll agree with the surprise on the (now) 1st place entry. It's a wonderful photo, but the sun has fallen below the horizon. I still gave it a 6.

My top pick was this one ==> , by jdannels.

"In the frame" just means in the image so the sun has to be in the photo.

Yep, thanks, Yanko! That meant mine was the highest-ranked B&W shot in the challenge. ;)

As for the "DNMC," my response is that Team Suck members now have first and third!

Isn't that makes them belong to the "Team Doesn't Suck" now?

Well, "suck" is an attitude, not a score description. :)

That was my first thought when I saw the winner, but I didn't want to trash a winner because that is tabu around here.

I've often wondered why discussing the winners is tabu particularly as we have a forum for that very reason, so feel free to discuss it at will.

I would like to mention though that I entered "concerto" because I love it, not to personally piss any of you off. I am responsible for entering "Concerto" I cannot be held resposible for the voters ( although I will say they show fine judgement :D ) or any photos that anybody else took or didn't take or did or did not enter, so don't attack me personally, m'kay.

GeneralE thanks for starting the discussion, I'm not convinced it's DNMC but I will own that it's pushing the boundries and like you I'm very encouraged that the voters liked it anyway.

Bobbie,
I can assure you that I am not upset over your placement and I congratulate on you a fine image. It is a photo to be proud of. Additionally, I don't think that I was personally attacking anyone, I was just agreeing that your image was in some ways a DNMC photo. As I also stated in my post, that is just one view out of many people on this site.

Again, congratulations on your placement, it is a fabulous photo and happy shooting to you in the future.

This was pretty much what my response to your post was going to be, so he saved me some typing :)

Aaawwww thank you and I didn't think you were upset at all. I more thought I'd jump in before things got too personal as they tend to do in these discussions, which is perhaps why they don't happen as often as they should. But it would be silly of me to think that everyone will agree with its placement...I did notice it didn't get straight 10's ( but it got lots ) :P

I do think we should be a little less precious about the ribbon winners and put them up for discussion though, who knows we might learn something in the process.
