I am looking between the Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX APO OS for Canon and the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS
Does anyone have an opinion over canons L glass vs the Sigma EX glass
The Canon Lens seems about £200 more
I'd also like the possibility to use a 1.4x converter which both seem to be compatible with, any know if this will work on my 40d and still be able to auto focus?
btw, this is to replace my Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM
Thanks
Robert

The Canon lens does work with the Canon 1.4x converter.
Does the Sigma have IS? If not, I would highly recommend the Canon.
L lenses from Canon are tough to beat for image quality. |

DISCLAIMER: I have never used either lens. However, if I were in your shoes, I'd lean toward the Sigma. It has a little more reach on the wide end (80mm as opposed to 100mm) which can be useful at times. Both have the stabilizer, so that's not an issue. Personally, I don't buy into the L-glass craze; it may be a little better, sometimes, but I feel the the off-brand professional lenses are very close to L-quality.
I cannot imagine the Canon being £200 worth of amazing over the Sigma.
I have the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and I find it to be every bit as good as the Canon version. Just my $.02

| I was faced with the same choice and went with the Canon. The image quality is similar, but Canon's IS works a little better, the focusing mechanism is significantly faster and the lens quieter and lighter. Plus, I would expect an L lens to hold its resale value better than Sigma. There's a review here, and probably many more available with a Google search. |

What Shannon said... and I will repeat again that if a buyer is purchasing for the long haul, then they need to be aware that Sigma reverse-engineers the Canon communication protocol (they do not have a license for the Canon mount) and therefore Sigma lenses may need to be "re-chipped" for newer cameras. Since we change our camera bodies much more frequently than we change our glass, this is a very important consideration, especially since Sigma has a track record of dropping support for re-chipping of lenses that aren't all that old. |

| the 100-400 is not so hot with the 1.4 I have 1 and its a very good lens as long as you don't push it too far if you are interested in birding and such i'd get the 400 prime it cheaper and that would work better with the 1.4 in my opinion. check what these guys have to say link |

I know for a fact that it definitely is, in my book, after having used both.

| Love the Canon 100-400! The push pull zoom takes some getting use to, but no big deal. |

Thanks for your relpies ... I think I will go for the Canon, the focus speed is important to me as I want to use it for motorsport and airshows ... plus the good resale value is going to be a good thing should I ever need to sell ... would love the fixed 400 (with a 300 and 500) but really need the variable focal length
thanks again
Robert
