Hi there,

I am looking for a Macro Lens ??? ( I think ) for my Canon 400D, the main use for the lens will be to photograph food, possibly nature photography i.e. plants and flowers etc, I'm probably looking to spend around the £200-£250 price mark if I can get a reasonable lens for that price. Also any recommendations as to where to buy the from would be greatly appreciated also.

Thanks,

Brian

Sigma 105 Macro I've heard good things about it and its cheaper then the Canon 100mm Macro (I'm sure you'd find it a little cheaper if you shop around).

edited to add a link of shots with it clicky clicky

Either the Canon 100/2.8 Macro USM or the Tamron 90mm Macro. Either are optically stellar. The Sigma 105 is a good lens, but optically not quite in the class of the other two. There are a few other things that the Canon has going for it...

1.) Internal focus (does not extend when focusing)
2.) Dual-range focus limiter switch; increases usefulness as a general purpose short tele, for which it is nice indeed... but not so much for sports or other uses where lightning-fast focus is a must.
3.) USM with full-time manual focus override (a really nice usability feature)
4.) Built like a tank

The Canon is a little more expensive, and does not include a lens hood. The lens hood is also a $40 USD item, which is rather expensive, but it is a very high quality hood.

there's a place near me selling the 100mm USM macro (awesome lens) for £225.

They're called The Real Camera Co. and they deliver everywhere. They specialise in medium format and 1950s film bodies, but they have a HUGE selection of stuff. Look them up in yellow pages and see what they have.

I'd go for the Canon 100mm 2.8 in a heartbeat - not only is it an EXCELLENT Macro lens - but I use it for portraits and street photography too and it ROCKS!

I got the Canon 100 F2.8 from an eBay retailer earlier in the year. Cost me just under £270 (and it was new). I was a bit concerned about getting something from eBay, but the lens came from a power seller who specialises in photo stuff. Wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

The Canon seemed to get better reviews online and in the mags, and for what I've used it for so far its been great!

PM me and I'll dig out the seller's details if you'd like.....
