I'm looking forward to buying my first DSLR - Canon 350d. Since a lot of people have complaints about the 18-55mm kit lense I'm considering the idea of buying body only and replace the kit lense with something better...
Anyway, money is the main issue, and I'm looking for something decent in the under 200$ range. I'll use it for allround purposes, mostly shooting portraits and landscape photographs. I don't need a fast lense as I won't be shooting any sports or things like that. Also, what do you think of this lense as a replacement for the kit lense: Canon Standard EF II Lens
Thanks a lot! |

Yes, there's only one choice within your budget. It's great glass and fast. The build is light, but there isn't any better for the money. |

great lens. Not sure about its usefulness for landscapes though... 50mm might be far too zoomed for that. I say 'might be' because it will do the job, just be careful with your cropping.
But as previously mentioned, you can't really do better for $80.

| kit lens isnt actually all that bad. If you are stepping up from a compact/prosumer you will be getting better quality images anyway. Yes you might get rid of it in the future, but it is cheap and does the job. Now if you want to go a bit more hardcore get the 50mm f/1.8 by all means (it is a good quality lens and should be included in anyone who shoots canon's kit just because of the bang for your buck - imo)- you will have to learn the hard way about "zoom" tho, otherwise known as walking ;) Works wonders for your photography tho :) |

| 50mm primes are awesome lenses, no matter the manufacturer. You'll get some great shots with it. |

| I'd definitely get the 50mm 1.8, but the 80mm equivalent focal length is not exactly ideal for landscapes - so I'd keep the kit lens as well. It's not a bad lens if you know where its strengths lie (usually at f/8!). |

Thanks everybody!
I think I'll buy the camera with the kit lense, as it is only 50$ more than the body only, and buy the 50mm f/1.8 one, couse I've realized everybodys satisfied with it a lot!
Can't wait for the new camera and lenses to arrive! It's gonna be quite a change since I sucked out everything from my trusty compact Sony...:-) |

Some places offer the body with a 24-85mm IS lens that's supposed to be a really nice lense for like $200 more. I know you said $200 was the most you wanted to spend.
I also have this lens. People around here will tell you how crappy this lens is. But, it's done ok for me for outdoor stuff, and it's better than the kit lens.
Oh and that 50mm lens is a great lens, but not very durable. I've had two of them now. The first one - for no apparent reason - got dust on the inside of it. The second one, I just sent out because a piece of plastic broke off on the inside of it. The guy who runs my local camera shop, says it's one of the lenses he has to send out for repair most frequently.

Heard good things about the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, better than the kit and has IS, its about $175 at B&H //www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/519475-USA/Canon_2042B002_EF_S_18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_IS.html
