I am a Canon girl. I have a 40D and have been a lifelong photographer. Many of you know me, but what you don't know is that I've never used a Nikon. I am really comfortable with all SLR's that I've touched, but a nice man I met at a camera store wants me to teach him how to use his new Nikon D40 tomorrow. I have never used or even held one, to my knowledge. I am sure I can teach him photography basics, but he doesn't know the slightest thing about how to operate his camera.
I told him to bring the manual and I will teach him the basics of SLR photography and show him around his camera. I explained that all SLRs are slightly different and I would need a few minutes with his manual and his camera in my hands to acquaint myself before showing him the ropes.
I would like to know of any tips (for me and for my student) tomorrow, from other Nikon D40 users... thanks in advance!!!
Arie :)

The D40 is VERY user friendly. I have been teaching my 7 yr old how to use it, and we have been doing manual settings alot too. Good luck, have fun.. and how very nice of you!!

You know I guess another question would be why does this man want you to teach him how to use his camera? Is this a date or do you think it is just a helpless man? Your not going to do this at your house are you? You never know these days and you might want to go to a park or something where there are a lot of people around you guys. Aslo you might want to park away from where you guys are going to be just incase.

Dirt_Divermakes a good point. If this man is unknown to you, use caution. |

If you want to be an eager beaver... I would recommend going to the Nikon website and download the manual for the D40 ahead of time :) . Most of the terminology should be the same (with the exception of a few product specific features), so a quick glance at that should give you all the info you need to help him with basic functions and even some advanced stuff.
Thats what i did when i had to wait for my 40D to arrive in the mail :D

The cameras do seem similar! Thanks friends! We're meeting at a restaurant. I won't meet a client at their home alone. He's a wealthy man who seems to have little patience. He doesn't want to read the manual, he wants someone to show him how to work the camera and he's willing to pay. I met him in the camera store, watched him buy the camera without blinking! He took less than 5 seconds to think about which one he wanted. He said to the sales woman, "I want a Single Lens Reflex with good quality. I have a Nikon lens at home from a film camera." She pulled the D40 off the shelf and he said, "I'll take it" without even a second thought! It was crazy!!!
I was standing nearby and we chatted while he was waiting to be rung up, and he decided that he wanted lessons on how to use it. I said I charge $50/hr and he said "perfect!" I didn't want to take advantage. I was just purely amazed!
Anyhow, leaving in 5 min. Wish me luck!

It went great! I started simple and we worked for 2 hours ($100). He even paid for lunch! He wants me to photograph his daughter at the park for her 4th birthday. I charge more for portrait sessions, and he's willing to pay! He even wants to order prints through me! Woohoo!

He knows I am in a serious relationship and he's just going through a divorce. I'm not worried about it! :)

I hope the lens he already owns has its own focus motor, since the D40 doesn't have an internal focus motor... everyone else read my mind too, that he was just looking for a date... :)

He might just need/want some company.
Please be very careful though, if he is going through a divorce he is going to have a lot of emotions he cannot express correctly, he might misread signals from you.

Arielle I would say like others before me, that this guy sounds like he's looking for company from someone beautiful like you. Just be really careful. I can see an episode of Judge Judy coming..."Man offers to pay for photo lessons but..."
Just looking out for ya... |

Sorry Arie but I pretty much have to jump on board with everyone else... this guy is looking for something more.
Whatever you do, use common sense and be careful.

Is he getting divorced because his wife got tired of him trying to pick up beautiful women in camera stores?
Just askin'...

Thank you all for your concerns! I have a good head on my shoulders and will ALWAYS meet in a public place. He seemed very attentive and interested in learning about his camera and telling me stories about his daughter, who is the light of his life. He has tons of photos of her, and wants to be able to photographer her at play with a better camera than a point and shoot. He has done well in auto mode, but i showed him how to really take advantage of metering, focus points and ISO. I'll be teaching him f-stop and shutter next time. I didn't feel weirded out by him too much. He did try to give me tons of advice on taxes (he's a CPA), and some of it was very helpful. It just went on and on.
Anyhow, I look forward to the portrait / play session with his daughter on Tuesday. She's 4 next weekend and is totally cute. I have a model release ready and plan to use some pix of her in my portfolio. :)
Thanks again my friends!
