I LOVE the auto ISO function of this camera, but am dismayed that it automatically shuts off with flash use. I shoot primarily in Aperture Priority mode (A) and leave my ISO default setting at 200 (lowest setting). As soon as I turn my flash on for low light shooting the camera turns auto ISO off, locks onto ISO 200, and gives me the crazy long shutter speeds required for the ISO 200 setting.
Is there a way to keep the Auto ISO setting working WITH flash? In mixed lighting conditions it's a real PITA to have to change my ISO settings every time I need to use the flash. |

Shoot in manual. Set the shutter and and aperture yourself. Or switch to shutter priority when using the flash. It is the shutter speed not so much the ISO that is important. I tried to leave my D70s on ISO 200 all the time. But really you should be shooting in manual you have so much more control. |

I can't understand why the camera would have a long shutter speed if you have a flash on. A flash can be used to freeze a foreground element (a person for example) while you leave the shutter open a bit to fill in the rest -that might be what's going on. But regardless, yes, use manual unless you have drastically changing lighting that you can't keep up with.
Just figure out what setting you like and just set it up yourself - tweak as needed - more predictable results. |

I'm assuming you use the dial-controls to change ISO? You should be able to change pretty quickly without going into a menu.

Yes, shooting manual gives full control... I used to use Manual for everything, but lately I've been learing to work with the camera and trust it to make the exposure decisions for me. This has made my shooting more consistant most of the time, only failing me every now and then requiring exposure compensation, but this is much less work than setting everything manually all the time.
I was really hoping that I could get Aperture to work with the flash and Auto ISO...
I stay away from Shutter priority if I can as it has an affect on depth of field, so it will be changing all the time.
Thans for the info! |
