I just bought a Gary Fong LightSphere for my D70s/SB600 combo. After playing with it for a bit I'm not totally convinced it it what I need... It seems I need to CRANK the compensation to equalize the exposure.

Any other flash mounted options I should be looking at? The Fong is also fairly expensive...

The Fongster's device is good where you don't have to contend with very high ceilings and/or lack of nearby walls. It relies on reflection from nearby surfaces; without them, you're losing the vast majority of your light. If your ceilings/walls are a funky color, well, you'll have funky-colored photos.
IMO, you are just as well off setting your flash manually for wide angle coverage and bouncing it off the ceiling.
For those situations where bounce from room surfaces is not practical, a bounce card like a Lumiquest will do a much more effective job than the lightshpere, by efficiently directing light forward and increasing (moderately) the apparent size of the light source. For more diffuse light in these situations, you are going to have to shoot into a larger reflector. That can be fine in a static situation, but if you need to move around you'll be challenged.

How about one of those strap-on mini-softboxes? Makes you look silly, but hey, anything for a great photo.

Thanks all. I've decided to return the GF Lightsphere. This thing just takes TOO much light out of the flash. Maybe this wouldn't be as much of an issue with a more powerful flash like the SB800, but with the SB600 I've got to CRANK so much flash comp. into the shot that the flash is firing at max power most of the time and taking too long to recycle.

I used one of those little slip-on units that is made from opaque white plastic and goes over the the front of the flash head, this seems to do a much better job with the SB600.

Have we left anything out as far as options go?

FWIW, I'm also going to look into upgrading to the SB800, not so much for the extra power, but more for the quicker recycle times and the option to use an external battery pack for even quicker performance. Even shooting fill flash in a fairly well lit church at three frames/second on my "old" D70s is a challenge for the SB600.
