is it valid in basic editing?

What about any other settings in Photoshop RAW editor?

You may not:
spot-edit your entry, except to remove sensor dust or hot pixels.
hold more than one DPChallenge account, ask anyone to vote on your behalf, or link to your entry’s voting page.
submit more than one entry per challenge.
use the same original image in more than one challenge.
use the marquee, lasso, or similar tool to select a portion of your image for any reason other than cropping or creating a border.
use ANY editing tool to create new image area, objects or features (such as vignettes, lens flare or motion) that didn’t already exist in your original capture.
add graphics, clip art, computer-rendered images or parts of other photographs to your entry or its border during editing.
add text to your entry or its border during editing. This includes copyright statements.
distort or stretch your image in any way.
submit a photograph depicting male or female genitalia, or acts of sex deemed inappropriate by a majority of the Site Council.

I don't think that's the correct clause that applies to vignetting, because adding vignettes is legal in advanced editing (to a degree). I was disqualified for adding a vignette in basic, even though there is no specific clause that applies to this. I've asked the SC to change the rules regarding vignettes in basic, and since i've asked them, numerous other people have been dq'ed for the same reason. This really is an issue that needs immediate attention.

I don't know. It still seems rather explicit to me:

You may not use ANY editing tool to create new image area, objects or features (such as vignettes, lens flare or motion) that didn’t already exist in your original capture.

That is right of out the basic rules.

If the vignette was there already you can enhance it through levels etc. You can't create it out of the ether.

I agree. I don't see how it can be any clearer. As proof the DQ in Sepia was self reported because they knew vignettes wasn't allowed in basic. Speaking of which, I wonder how many others have used that same lightroom preset and not even realized it adds a vignette.

i dont understnd why vinetting is illegal... i mean its almost like puting a border on it but i mean if it happens in real life and it was your intention to use it why cant you... you would have to ho make/buy a crazy huge lens hood or something to make it happen in real life

did DPC misspell vignette or something, it is clear as day
and yet even after it is emboldened you still question it?
no worries though, a lesson learned.......

or make one with a large cardboard tube, like from industrial TP or whatever fits. Just hold in place and shoot. Cut to adjust. I used to do it w/ 35mm

Or buy a step down ring for a filter. Lots of ways to do it in camera....I like the TP tube idea though.

As for the "it can happen in real life bit"? So can wonderful blue skies full of clouds. So why can't I take those from another picture and patch them on the one I want? Because this site is about photography not Photoshop. Advanced gives you a fair bit of latitude with processing but basic is there to emphasize good photography. Even under advanced, the extra freedom you get is to work a photograph not add stuff that wasn't already there.

You're right, they did add vignettes to the basic rule's "new features" clause. Hopefully fewer people will make this mistake.
