How do you make a background to look completely white like this? I always end up with gray background. |

I use a couple of lights/umbrellas on either side of the subject at 45 degree angles aimed at the
white background, not at the subject. A third light or maybe a speed light with diffuser is then used
for the subject in the fore ground. White balance in camera also needs to be correctly set. Photoshop
can also put some punch into the white in post pro. Works for me. |

As I assisted with this shot, I can tell you...
background is a light tent with a second flash on a tripod in it, directed in a 45 deg angle downwards. power is half as much as the flash from front left (with umbrella) |

If you had one off-camera flash you could direct it at the backdrop while lighting the subject with on-camera flash (as a workaround) It'd take a bit more work to get the exposures balanced - But one way or another I'd say get an off-camera flash anyway, it opens the door to a variety of useful lighting techniques. |

If the BG is 3 stops brighter than the subject it will be white. The whiter it is to start with the better of course. Butcther paper is good for small stuff, a sheet can be used (backlit even), lowes sell a 4x8 sheet of 'paneling' that is white on one side for $11 that is fantastic for all sorts of things.

You can do whatever you want in photoshop. If it turns out grey, just use curves to completely blow it out and then mask the subject. |

Just light it.
If you're not lighting it (i.e. if it is lit by your ambient light), remember that your camera's meter will try to make your scene an 18% gray. If you don't accommodate for this, your white background will go a dull gray.

Except that is not legal in basic editing for challenge purposes.
