A question about using the Canon 580EX to control the 430EX:
If you set 2nd curtain sync on the master, will it sync the slave as well?
I basically want a 2nd curtain sync shot with more light than the single strobe will provide. |

I believe that in master mode, 2nd curtain sync is no longer an option on the 580. :(

As my mind wandered on the subject, I also wondered:
If I set exposure to bulb and used second curtain sync (on a single flash)... will that have the effect of my being able to freeze the action whenever I like?
Open the shutter - let motion flow... and at the precise moment I like (or a split second before actually) close the shutter (in turn firing the flash) to stop motion. |

Heck, if you take the flash off the camera, you can fire it *any* time you want ... as many times as you want. It can be very effective for multiple exposures or for freezing the frame at just the right moment. And the shutter neither has to be timed to open nor shut at the proper time. Just set it to bulb and open/shut when convenient. (this all assumes, of course, that the scene is dark enough not to overexpose by leaving the shutter open)

Thanks again David. That idea did occur to me actually, but with the same caveat you mentioned. If you wanted to do this outside at dusk (rather than in a darkened studio), the shutter not closing at the point where you want action to freeze might just be a problem.
I'll just have to tinker a bit. Thank you for indulging my idle thoughts without offering the accursed go do it yourself pronouncement. |
