Originally posted by xianart's show blurb...: I started photographing seriously in 1986, and fell in love with it. I lived with my camera, became one with the chemicals; did a BFA in Photography (and Painting). My camera (a K1000) was an extension of my body. Then real life intervened, and I could no longer afford the ten rolls of film a week I had gone through in University.
After years away from serious photography, taking very well composed snapshots (years during which my K1000 and my Leica were stolen), and teaching art for 7 years, my Father's bequest in 2005 enabled me to get in to digital with a good DSLR.
I had found my love again.
I suppose the best way to describe my current work is 'a dark beauty': A combination of threat and innocence in any subject matter - from landscapes to children. I enjoy using the dishonesty of the camera to change appearances through lack of context. While the images are very seldom cropped or altered in any extreme way, I like using the frozen moment of time to tell a completely different story than the one that was happening when the shutter was pressed.
Inspiration? Some of many: Robert Frank, Sally Mann, Joel Peter Witkin, Minor White, Brassai, Degas, Rembrandt, Gary Winnogrand, Lisette Model, Ken Oosterbroek, my family, the world around me, the nature trail I walk daily.
My eyes and soul are hungry, and will never tire of seeing and holding the images that present themselves to me, wherever I go.

This is the end of a statement from my most recent show (the first section was basic bio stuff - the wheres and whens). When I was doing my BFA we had to write a 4 page artist statement -it was brutal - basically justify your existence right now...
basically, think about what you'd like to know about an artist at a show. a little about their life, about why they make art, anything specific thing that influences them, how making art makes them feel.
having a show is great fun, and absolutely terrifying. you'll love it!
