I am trying to process an image for uploading to DPCPrints and I'm thoroughly confused.

I know I disguise myself as a reasonably intelligent woman but it's all an act.

So help me out please!

I have taken the image I started with and rotated/ cropped etc to achieve the exact content I want.

The resulting image is 1637 x 1236 pixels in size with no border yet added.

Given that I do not want to crop and change aspect I was thinking of adding the initial border and then a slightly larger border around that to size the canvas up to fit one of the required aspect ratios.

But I'm kind of lost.

The nearest aspect ratio I can see on the list is 1200 x 1500.

Does that mean I should resample downwards to hit that ratio?

Uuugh...

Any advice (in nice easy terms) would be gratefully received.

What software are you using to resize?

Photoshop 6.0

I actually have a little more touchup to do but I am thinking ahead...

Tutorial by jmseltzer was used to make this print:

Thumbnail is small to save space.

Edit: Make sure that the resolution is 150dpi instead of 72dpi. 300dpi is best but I believe that DPCprints will resize or not needed to make a great print.

Sizes that are available as prints.

What I tend to do, which is hardly THE way to do it, is to create a new canvas at the size you want printed - eg 8x10 or 8x12 - and then paste your image into that (making sure the DPI is the same on both), and resample up as per the resampling guide tutorial.

Otherwise use the fixed aspect ratio with the marquee tool and do your inital crop with that to get the correct ratio you want printed, eg 1:1.5 or 1:1.25 etc.

Oh yes thanks for reminding me about that - I had read it in the past a while ago but forgot about it.

THANKS!

I can't use the fixed ratio tool (which is how I normally would do this and how I sized my first entry for DPC) because the image in question doesn't suit those aspects exactly.

What I have done so far is increased the canvas size by adding a border which is identical at top and two sides but wider at the bottom, so I can add some text, and makes the image fit the nearest aspect ratio.

THANKS

Last question:
Should I be saving different versions of the file optimised for printing at different sizes or just submit the one optimised for the largest print size?

Submit the largest you will want them to print and sell.
They will do the rest for you. :)

So I guess the size limit for challenges does not apply to print submissions (outside the challenge)...

Also - how many kb's does a large print like that turn out to be? We don't have a lot of space on the server but I still see people with close to 100 images... So... I'm not sure how they do it.

The size you're allowed refers only to the preview pictures you upload not the actual printable files... but I might have misunderstood.

I think images wider than 640 pixels are resized down to that size (not good). I usually make "placeholder" images in the Portfolio as small or smaller than Challenge entries -- they are there as "ads" to attract interest. If someone is interested in the print, they will see a completely new preview automatically generated from the printable image. Because of that, a printable image doesn't have to exactly match an entry photo; you can re-crop, add a border or caption, convert to B+W, run filters, or anything else you want to do to it.

Besides the 10mb (total) limit on placeholder images in the portfolio, there is a 14mb limit for any individual printable file.

OK well I submitted two versions of the image in question to DPCPrints...

One cropped to my preference - which isn't exactly any of the offered aspect ratios - with a border added. And same image with no border cropped to an exact aspect ratio.

I don't know that anyone would want to buy them but it was fun and now I know how to prepare and upload them!
