The right hand shot, though, gives us that long, wonderful view up the river, and the woods and their relationship to the water is very pleasing.

A very helpful comment, and I appreciate it very much. I tried several different crops, even some as you descibe, but I kept coming back to that one for some reason. I plan to go back there soon and take some more, hopefully better, shots. It was pretty overcast that day and I had never used the higher ISO settings on my new camera. I didn't want to waste the small amout of time I had and end up with grainy images. Since then I have found that the camera actually takes very good photos at the higher ISO settings. In my opinion, they are much better than I used to get with high-speed film in my Canon A-1.
