That's very "encouraging" for the non-ribbon commenters. I stopped commenting some time ago (although I didn't get only one unpleasant PM ages ago, as I try to keep my comments humble and gentle taking into consideration my own scores), first on the photos I found weak, then also on the ones I liked very much. Why? I had suspicions my credentials are not enough to comment. And I was right it seams.

BAH!! Comment away! Comments should be taken as opinion and do NOT NEED TO BE QUALIFIED! You can take the crappiest photos in the world and it has nothing to do with what you think about a particular image of someone else's.

Commenter's need to get thick skin as much as the photogs do!

I agree with Art. Just because someone can't (yet) take a decent picture doesn't mean that they can't see what they like and dislike in a photo. If they can express what they like and dislike it's only going to help both the photographer who's image they are commenting on and themselves.

Jeb makes a valid point, you do have to interpret the comment among other factors. I try to keep in mind that the commenting is part of that person learning what works, what does not, an why. If it lines up with my own judgment of my entry, or several commenters say the same thing, then I know it is a pretty accurate critique. I also am learning to judge whether a comment is actually pointing out a flaw that needs to be corrected, or if it is more of a personal preference comment.

I did PM another member who left a critique on my FS entry yesterday. She was surprised that I thanked her for leaving a criticism, (and probably a low vote with it). I knew my entry would not have appeal for everybody. I had already gotten a handful of positive comments and I appreciated getting some feedback from one of the folks who didn't care for it. I much prefer to get the feedback and know why my latest masterpiece is bombing.

If you'll check out some recent ribboners, you will find I am sometimes the only one to leave a criticism. (the JPEG police are on patrol!) It's up to the photog if they take my critique as valid or not.

I have responded to comments during a challenge when its obvious that someone wasn't sure about something in the photo.

I have actually received emails from comments I have left which made me reconsider a vote based on more information. But, if I do change a vote based on a PM from a comment, I really first evaluate whether or not I may have been unjust in my original vote. Most of the time, I don't change it.

I've been wondering this week, if it is acceptable and/or common place for people to discuss their current entry with those who leave comments. I recently received a comment that seems more like a question, and it crossed my mind that since they were not anonymous I could reply if I wanted to, so before doing anything else I decided to talk about it here. As for their reply, they will have to wait until the end of the challenge. I don't believe it is fair to give away who you are during a challenge even to those who have already voted, since they can change their vote.

Thanks for any insight, cheers!

Never would I PM an commenter. Why? Because once they find out it is me, they will lower the score ! ;)

The only time I have ever responded to a comment during voting was to quote the rules at them. You know the "if you suspect a violation, vote as if it is legal and submit a ticket". Other than that, all answers to questions in the comments can be answered in you comments on you own photograph so others who might have shared the questions the commenter posed , can benefit from your explanation.

I've never responded to a comment with a PM to the commenter during voting. I have afterwards, or I've done as BrennanOB suggests and added more information in my own notes (sometimes the answer is already there). I'm not sure how many people revisit though. If someone PMs me about a comment I left, I usually wait until after voting to respond, though I think I may have responded more quickly on occasion if there didn't seem to be any harm in doing so. I've never changed a vote in response to a PM.
