so what do people really expect in the free study challenges? any advice?
04/30/2008 12:25:32 AM · #2
These to me are the toughest challenges. :)

Submit what you want and don't worry about it. If you start taking pictures to accommodate this crowd you will be jumping off a building in no time.

I have found that a Free Study entry must have balance between being technically sound and creative. If one of them fails then so does your entry. You have to take both to the edge without crossing it. I have not found out how to do that...YET!

Grand landscapes with vivid colors, sharp as a tack wildlife photos, and aurora borealis are your best bets for getting in the top 10 :)

I've never done well in a free study - the competition is definitely a LOT steeper and voting is a lot stingier, you have to have something that is really eye-popping.

Actually, I find the free studies easier. You take what you enjoy photographing, if you enjoy it, the chances are you'll be good at it, if your good at it, the chances are you may score well.....! Just a theory :O)

so basically the perfect picture. lol no pressure i guess:)
04/30/2008 02:59:26 PM · #11
i actually think my photo has a good chance of scoring high, its one of my better photos and i think it will appeal to the voters

There is never a tell when it comes to voters. One day they may pick something highly creative and the next a bubble in a glass. Anything from Complex to simplicity and there is no telling. Many images that have scored high on average I scored low, and visa versa.

What is expected? Something Different, something clean, Something Pretty, Something Bright. Razors edge sharpness and smooth transitions.

Though for me.... I suppose I will let the fates decide my next move.

Lots of answers to your Q and if anybody had given you the holy grail answer then we'd all be scoring 7+ votes. Looking at your average I'd say submit the image you like best and take it from there. I submit but don't vote on free studies so if you ever want to send a couple of alternatives over I'd be happy to give you my thoughts on which would score best (a little late for April mind you).

I was going to say a well taken, simple, clean and interesting image oft scores highly but since my April FS only has 2 of these elements I'd be shooting myself in the foot lol

I usually submit my best or favorite shot from the preceding month that did not go into a challenge. This time around I submitted a fave. Even though I have another one that is more of a sure thing for a good score, I want to know how my own personal favorite will fare. It'll probably be stuck in the low 5's or high 4's, but sometimes I'm surprised.

Nods, I submitted an image I am pretty sure will do poorly but *I* like the image, I think it is good, and I just want to share it.

It is hard not to take voting seriously but it really should just be taken as fun.

I just wish more people would leave positive critisim about my entries.

I think it is just a lucky shot.

I'm staying up until midnight to find out what my 1st few scores will be (that will tell me how bad i'll plummett) my image has been submitted since around the beginning of the month-and i've contemplated taking it out several times but- have left it in because it can't possibly do worse than a little above a 4 can it!? :( *really hoping for above a 5 tho...in finality)

nah- just 'perfect photography' :) kinda along the lines of what they themselves shoot (the voters) :) j/k

I myself expect artistic images with some element of imagination or creativity that just jumps out at me and says the photographer really loves this image a lot! :) :-D (tends to be most images I see but hey; I'm a high voter) :P

I enjoy the variety of entries when voting in a freestudy. In fact, perhaps I should forget about voting in the other current challenges and try to do a 100% comment on this month's FS.

The blue ribbon winning image will be the one you have taken without giving any thought to a ribbon. ;\
