For wildlife and sports and some landscape Would you trade this lens

Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR

for this lens

Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D ED

I would trade it regardless of what you shoot. The 70-300 is only a $600 lens and the other is abour $1K. You loose some reach, but gain speed.

Even if you never planned to use it, you could sell it on ebay for around $900 and buy the 70-300 again brand new and pocket $300.

Seems a no brainer to me.

I did exactly that a couple of years ago and it was the best trade I ever made.

Thanks. Is it still okay even though I'd be giving up the VR? I do like the way the VR locks in the focus, but the additional speed would be nice to get.

Also is there noticeable vignetting using a teleconverter?

Take the 80-200. You won't regret it.

What about the vignetting with a teleconverter? I'm afraid I'll miss the additional 100mm

I could be wrong here, and I'm sure someone will tell me if I am. The teleconverter mounts between the body and the lens, thus no vignette. By my logic, vignetting would only occur at the other end of the lens. I could be wrong though! lol

Thanks Jake. I thought I did hear that with a 2x there might be some. Somewhere I read something about using the 1.4x which doesn't have as much vignetting.
Anyone else?

I'm not an expert on Nikon glass, but I do think you'll find that a 1.4x converter will be more useful than a 2x. the 2x loses two stops, and AF will be possible but AF speed and ability to lock without hunting may suffer. You will also probably need to stop down at least a stop to regain sharpness, so count on using that combination only at f/11 or at best f/8. Not a very flexible combination.

Okay- so I've taken the first step to sell the 70-300VR if anyone is interested it's on Ebay

Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR

I'm a little nervous about spending this much on a lens.

Thanks. Anyone else have input on vignetting on the teleconverter?
