Before I got my D300 I remember reading that it contains a rechargable battery inside for managing the clock and possibly the settings. It has a charge lasting about 3 months. However it is not a user servicable part. Since rechargable batteries fail after so many years, sometimes as little as one year. Doesn't this make it possible that the D300 will fail to remember its settings at some point and require service to continue using it?

All dslr's have something similar. Still haven't heard of any problems like that from the earlier generations, so probably not for a while.

I`m sure it will last many years. And when it does fail i`m sure it would be a cheap quick fix for nikon.
There are many more things more likely to happen, like dropping the thing :)

Well that is a little reassuring, not that I intend to ever drop the thing :) I never dropped my G2 hehe.

Thanks for the words of encouragement :)

The cell in question is Li-Ion. They usually have a MINIMUM lifetime of 3 to 5 years. I have backup Li-Ion batteries in radio equipment that are over 12 years old. And as Mark says, replacing it will probably be pretty cheap.
