So, I had an idea (uh-oh, I hear you say) and it goes like this.....
This challenge is a points-scoring event, and instead of an individual image determining the winner, it is about a the cumulative points total. However, all of the Photographers are present in the same area at the same time and therefore have the same opportunity.
An example:
Start time: 4.00am
Finish time: 10.00pm
Photographers are required to check-in and check-out and are given a challenge entrant number. Photographers may start after the start time and finish before the finish time.
Obviously, any cheating would lead to automatic disqualification, not only from that event but subsequent events depending on severity.
There would be several classes based on age and sophistication of the camera body but for every participant, the challenge would consist of 5 categories.
No more than 25 images may be submitted in total but entrants may submit less than 25 images. No more than 5 images may be entered per category.
The categories would vary each event and depend on the location and only images taken between the start and finish time may be submitted.
After the finish time, no further images can be taken. Photographers then have 5 days to submit edited images (with edits limited to roughly the equivalent of the basic rules of this site - obviously much more information would be provided on this)
Image judges would award between 0 and 10 points to each of the images submitted.
There would be a winner of each category as well as overall winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) based on the cumulative scores of all of their images.
What do you think? If it's a good idea, I was thinking of running such an event in Central Park NYC in a few months.
I would anticipate there would be an entry fee of sorts as well as cash prizes. And if I can work my connections, the winning images would be in the local papers as well as on the centralpark.com and centralparknyc.com websites.
The objective: really to get people to start taking an interest in their surroundings, wildlife, and the environment - as well as having fun with photography. I'm not looking to make a profit here, I would think that the proceeds after costs would go to the central park conservancy fund or a similar organization for other locations.
What are your thoughts? Would you be interested? What have I missed?
Q: What about other cities?
A: Yes, I would certainly imagine replicating this outside of NYC. And it need not be just in cities (in fact it may be fun to do it in some more obscure places). But to start with, to iron out the bugs, and to obtain critical mass, I would start where I am based.
