Ok...the mirror on the XTI broke while on our trip to Maui. Anyone have an idea on what it will cost to have repaired? I was taking some pics of the shoreline...when I heard a strange sound, and had very little view....removed the lens, and the glass mirror was shattered! Have no idea how or why this happened...just happy I had a second camera for the trip.

do you still have warranty? If so, I would suggest looking into that.

I would send it in to Canon's repair facility ASAP. The back LCD screen on my 5D broke (my fault) but they repaired it for just the price of the LCD, and the labor was free. If your broken mirror wasn't your fault, I'm sure Canon will foot the entire bill.

Just got off the phone with Canon...after an hour of passing me around they told me the mirror would not be covered under warranty since I was inside of 1 year with the camera and they said it was not possible to break under normal conditions! I explained I was just snapping pics and then heard the strange sound, and most everything in the viewfinder was gone...removed the lens and saw the mirror was broken. Got lucky with a local camera repair shop...they will fix in less than a week, cost is $17.00 for the mirror and $95.00 for labor. That was even cheaper than Canon said they would do it for...plus I don't have to ship the camera off anyplace, and would not void any other warranty since the repair shop is authorized to make Canon repairs. Hope to get it in for repair sometime this week. Just couldn't believe Canon would not cover the repair under warranty.

I won't get into a brand war here, but I will be sure to add this to my friendly notes about Canon. I used to be a loyal follower but no longer. :)

Glad you found a good deal on your repair. What type of lens were you using at the time?

I was using the Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

So it was even a Canon brand lens, geeze. Don't you wish you could physically smack some of these companies some days? Good luck with the repair!

I think Canon are getting too big for their boots, users don't count unless they have the top of the range gear, which is one of the reasons I have dropped them in favour of Pentax. The quality of the K200D shots leaves the 30D/40D in the dust.

Hope you get it fixed okay. My 300D dropped a mirror in the first week, that started my love/hate relationship with Canon. Now, I won't even consider them as a base to build a system.

Well, than the mirror was definitely faulty.
After the repair write a letter with lots of cc's to Canon service, repairs, marketing, whatever. Explain the situation, explain how you feel let down by the service department and that in your opinion mirrors in cameras should last the camera's lifetime without problems and that you would very much appreciate it if they would consider paying your repair bill. And all the nice publicity that would give them, because you would surely report your experiences back here at DPC with it's huge Canon membership.....
Seriously, it's worth a try.
Also make sure to tell them that the failure of your camera had a negative impact on your holiday experience and that you would absolutely not expect this from a quality company like Canon. And ask for a reply from a high up person. Not someone at the callcenter.

Got the camera fixed..new mirror, and had the focus screen replaced. Funny thing is...the pics seem sharper than they did when the camera was new. I had it repaired at a local shop...ended up $237 total. I'm happy with the camera and the repair...just not with Canon.
