Does anyone else have a Dell Inspirion 1720 (or something similar) that they would like to share the display settings of?

I can't for the life of me adjust this (new) laptop to get a decent contrast/brightness ratio! I have my old laptop next to it (a Dell Inspiron 6000) which has a matt screen and the pics looks great. I ordered the new one with a gloss screen, but it's too contrasty and bright, I don't know if this has anything to do with the glossy screen or not, but I just can't get it right...

Also on another point, will a calibration device/software just work with the pc's/graphics card's own gamma/contrast/brightness settings, or does it use some other method to get the best picture?

I'll be well annoyed with this purchase if I can never fix it...

I have a Dell Inspiron something or other for work and its screen sucks.

It's no use calibrating it because it just goes randomly awol as soon as it's powered down and back up.
