Which bag? Wow, what a loaded question and one I personally struggle to answer - that probably explains why I have about 10 camera bags, including 3 backpacks and am currently looking for a different one. Here are someother things for you to consider in case you haven't yet:
1. Will you be taking it on an airplane? If so, which carrier and domestic and/or international? Regional jets barely hold people let alone a full camera backpack unless you do your homwework - ThinkTank. I have an awesome, nearly new Lowepro CompuRover AW for sale at a great price because I live in a small town and can only fly out on regional jets that do not provide enough room for this bag.
2. From personal experience, a laptop compartment that is at the back of the laptop, or between the bag and the body might provide extra protection from knocks, but is a disaster waiting to happen as a loaded bag tries to flex with your computer taking all of the pressure. My next bag will definitely have the laptop compartment on the outside like the ThinkTank or the Lowpro Vertex.
3. The problem with big bags is that you can carry lots of stuff. This is a problem because the load can get daunting. I am currently trimming down my field kit to reduce weight and my next bag will be selected so that I can't take more than I really need.
4. Can you get clever and create a custom solution? For me the bag that works the best right now is a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW. I bought a neoprene sleve for my 13" laptop and it actually fits in the outside compartment. Maybe you can modify something you like that doesn't appear to be perfect. For me a backpack sucks to use in the field as you constantly have to take them off and set them down to re-configure. These days I am thinking about a small backpack like the ThinkTank Airport Antidote with all of the insides removed and my gear inside packed in a ThinkTank Speed Racer with modular add-ons. The backpack would be used just for transport during travel.
5. Check out www.cambags.com. For folks like us that can't go to a store and check out all of the bag selections, this is a lifesaver.
Good luck and if anybody needs a good used bag, be sure to give me a haller! |

Thanks for the feedback.
I will be checking out the links before ordering. Trying to make sure the bag holds enough but still is considered carry on size.
