I'm thinking of spending a weekend at the Outer Banks sometime soon pretty much exclusively for photography. I've never been there before - Does anyone have any tips on places I should make a point to see? I'm very interested in getting some shots of the local lighthouses and wildlife. If you have any pictures from this area, please feel free to post them as well = )

Just got back from Nag's Head this weekend, but can't help you much on photo ops! The biggest photos ops I found were high water, badly eroded beachfront, debris everywhere, and torn up piers and decks from the nor'easter they had 2 weeks ago. Did get a shot of a heron, but haven't even downloaded it yet.

i lived on the outer banks for 11 years. i would suggest heading south. kitty hawk, kill devil hills and nags head are the tourist trap areas. alltho, in nags head is jocky's ridge which is the biggest sand dune on the east coast and you can get some great shots off it.
but defenetly head south to pi island, which is about 20 minutes south from nags head. pi island (not sure if thats how you spell it but its pronounced 'pee') is a nature santuary, the whole thing. there are spots where you can stand on the sand dune on the beach, and see the ocean on one side and endless lakes/ponds and marshlands on the other. its awesome. you can take pictures of beach as far as teh eye can see w/ no buildings at all around.
plz share the shots you take, id love to see them! :) and GL. |

oh the hours i spent on that table..
on second thought... looking for a guide? lol ;) |

There are a lot of photo ops at the Outer Banks
The lighthouse at Corolla
The wild horses at Corolla
The Wright Bros. Monument
Hang Gliders at Jocky's Ridge
Plenty of Boats
There are Osprey Nests but you may need to rent a kayak
The WhaleHead Club
Try Awful Arthurs if you like good seafood
Enjoy!
(Go Pitt!!!!, spent 8 years in Squirrel Hill) |

Wow Maverick, I just read your profile. Sorry about the Penn State thing :( (Just kidding, I went to Pitt) I was born in Va., met my future wife in Hampton, she is from Pittsburgh. I also play (well, I try) the guitar, sax and graduated from Pitt with an Electrical Engineering degree. If you need advice on where to go in Va. for photo ops., let me know! |

Go south. The Northern Parts of the Outer Banks suck. Head straight down to the Oregon Inlet. At the Inlet you get onto the Bonner Bridge, which is about 3 or 4 miles long. Just after the bridge on the left side (heading south) there's parking for fishing. This is worth a quick stop, because you can get out of your car and head due east to the ocean. Lots of rocks and you get a clear shot of the entire bridge.
Once you get back into your car and head south again, you'll be hitting some neat parts of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. You'll see a couple of spots to stop on the right (Sound Side), where they have lookouts for birdwatching. This is about the only place you catch a sunset shot, because your facing west. One good idea, is to cross the street and hike east to the top of the dunes on the ocean side. You can get a good shot of the sun setting through the natural grasses. Good stuff! (you'll see what I mean if you get the chance)
Back in the car and continue south to Rodanthe. The Rodanthe peer is worth a peek, as it is one of the best surfing spots. They may call this the (Wave's peer too, it's been a while)
Back in the car and continue south to the CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE IN BUXTON. You have to stop at this one. They just moved it a few years back, so I'm not sure how it's positioned. The park service runs a small museum and visitor center near the lighthouse. They can lead you to a nature trail, but ask them if it is worth a peek this time of year.
Back in the car and continue south to Ocracoke Island. It's worth the ferry ride. Another lighthouse...much smaller and no stripes, but cool.
That's all I have, but that should be plenty.
Wright's museum is a must too.
Cheers ~

what ever you do.. DONT GO TO AWFUL ARTHURS! awful arthurs is to seafood as mcdonalds is to fast food.
if you want good seafood go to Goombays or Tortuga's Lie (both on the beach road). and if you want fine dining seafood go to Kelly's (they have the best sweet potato bread ever!), the outer banks brew station or Ocean Boulevard.
ive been to pretty much every resturant on the outer banks at one time or another. and worked at half a dozen more lol. another few suggesstions is Mama Quans (the best seared tuna and asian salad) and Chili Peppers (awesome fish tacos).

Well, I got back about an hour ago from the Outer Banks. I only spent one day due to the weather (grey skies) and lack of color at this time of the year, but I'll hopefully go back again over the summer. I'll post the more interesting shots I got on my portfolio over the next couple of days. Thanks to all who offered advice -- I made it to most of the places suggested.
Here is the first of several (consequently, my favorite of the bunch = )

Very well done lighthouse shot, getting it at that time of day is difficult. |

Hey Mav, stunning shot! I love the stars just showing, ives it a serene feel.
By the look of the shadows you also had moonlight from the right, correct? The overall effect is wonderful.
