Hi,
I'm thinking about getting myself a new Canon 40D. The packages that are available right now are the one with Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens or the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens.
Which one would you guys get?

i wouldn't buy the 17-85 for any reason ... there's simply better lenses out there for the same price or cheaper
the 28-135 is a great lens, but is not wide
perhaps just get the body alone and new 18-55 IS from canon ... it's a low end lens, but i read it's just as good and the 17-85 and much cheaper
from there ... spend some time deciding on a lens based on your needs

Not sure why you say that about the 17-85. Sure there are better lenses. But I have found this one to be quite capable and a good walk around lens. I don't know why people trash it so much. |

A couple of questions to ask yourself that would help you decide.
1) What do you intend to shoot? Something that needs a wide angle or something that needs more or a zoom? If the former then go for the wide angle. If the latter then go for the 28-135.
2) Are you considering any other lenses at the same time or will you be using the one lens for a time? |

Thanks all for your post.....
For now it would be my only lens for the next few months. As per shooting it would be more a everyday lens i'm looking for. For now i'm shooting Olympus with a 14mm-45 lens and I enjoy the wide angle but I think i could deal without it for a few months.
What would be a good wide angle for a canon thats not too expensive? |

Here is one thing to consider. The Oly 14-45 is 28-90 equivilent on your camera. The 17-85 is roughly 28-136. So in 35mm equivilant you like what you get with your 14-45 then get the 17-85, you will be the same at the wide end and longer at the long end.

On my 40D, my "walk-around" lens is the "Canon EF 28-135mm IS" lens. I have a lenses on either side of that range in case I need a wider or longer composition.
I was skeptical about the 28-135 at first, thinking that it wouldn't be wide enough, but it is for my everyday usage. I have a ton of photos with that lens. To see what that lens can do, have a look at some of my recent captures with it.
