I just signed-up for a group photo shoot next month. There will be 8-10 models and who knows how many photographers. I have a D300, 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 10-20mm, and an 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6. They will be supplying everything except the camera and sync cord (actually they have a few I can borrow). The models will be available for paid/trade one-on-one shoots after the group shoot.

This is my first time doing this - do I have enough or the right equipment (to get some decent shots)? Does anyone have any tips that I should know about beforehand? When do I get model releases signed? Is there anything specific I should know if I want to do a shoot afterward with a specific model? Is there any kind of etiquette I should be aware of when working with other photographers at the same time (i.e. sharing lights, moving around for shots, etc.)?

Wow, sounds like you have a whole lot of craziness going on there. Let me see if I can answer or offer my opinion to your questions,

1. Do you have enough or the right equipment to get decent shots.
A. If you have a camera, and a lens, memory card/film, battery's then I would say yeah.

2. When do you get the model release signed?
A. That part I can not tell you. It all depends on how the group operates. However, from my experience it is handled at the end of the event.

3. Anything specific to know to shoot with a model?
A. Thats between you and the model. First of all it takes the guts to walk up to one and say HI!.

4. Proper Etiquette?
A. Again that depends on the group and how the event is being run. Now, you say they have a few sync cords, first rule with sharing anything is DON'T BE A HOG!! no one likes them. Just be cool, and follow direction of the group leaders/coordinators and don't be shy.

5. Tips to know?
A. well this is your LUCKY DAY!! considering you are in SoCal.
There is a Industry Get-together this saturday the 19th. see This Threadto find out more.
Next there is a Open House/Studio which should give you some practical experience in the event you are going to. It is loads of fun and you can read more about it in This ThreadThis event is on the 25th of this month.
Lastly, the studio is working on putting together a special Studio Lighting Workshop exclusively for DPC members. You can read about it In This Thread

There were a couple DPC members who went to the last open house/studio, this one coming up will have a Live Band as well so thats going to be crazy great fun. Send me a message if you want more or contact wynnesome who is the studio owner.

Hope this helps and hope to see you at some events.

Hey Steve:

You should check out the studio get togethers Andrew mentioned... a few of us went last month and it was a great experience. I am planning on going down to the open house on the 25th (I can't make the 19th meetup).

I just noticed you're in the Valley. I'm in Northridge... if you are ever in need of someone to go out and shoot with, let me know.

Thanks Andrew, I was posting with you over in the other threads. I can't make the shoots with dates in the next few weeks due to scheduling conflicts. The DPR shooting thread I'm already involved with. This shoot is by someone else and the time just happens to work.

Really appreciate the resopnses, it's about what I figured. Just go with the flow and see what happens.

More info: they will have model sign-up's during the shoot, and then we just get together with the model and shoot some more, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Hi Chuck,

I'm down in Tarzana. Thanks for the response, I didn't hear about the last get together until the day after and the timing on the meetup, open house, and shoot are all bad for me for one reason or another, which is really annoying me but what can you do. This other group is doing the shoot on the same day as the meet and greet but earlier, and it sounds pretty good.

Do you go out shooting with any other local groups?

L()L yeah I remember now, I have been so brain dead lately with this crazy congestion thing I have. I can't hardly remember anything properly.

Well I understand about being busy and all, but just keep an eye open I am sure Wendy plans to continue to have the open house/studio events and other events as frequently as she can.

Sorry to hear you're unavailable, but I know how it goes. Have fun with the shoot. The last open house was my first foray into studio shooting and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. As far as other groups, most of my outings have been with the LA DPC group... a couple of years ago we were going out monthly, and I think we are working towards getting back to that. I know there's an L.A. Shooters group (Yahoo) but I haven't really been on one of their outings. I have also looked for local camera clubs, but haven;t really found any local to the valley.

Actually it's not typical "busy" it's a planned Saturday evening and an annual, weekend camping trip. Just bad timing.

I should be on her list and I'm keeping tabs on the site. I could have made the last one, just didn't know about it.

Thanks,

Steve

Is this the group that went to the poppy fields last month? If so, how do I get "in" it or do I just watch for random messages occasionally?

Some of us went, but yes, it is the same group (so to speak). The best way is really to look out for threads for LA DPC outings, and there is a general ongoing LA DPC thread which I have as one of my watched threads so I can find it easily:

LA DPC ongoing thread

You "get in" simply by showing up! Everyone misses one or two of the GTGs because of work, other commitments or life in general, but everyone is always welcome to come to any of the outings. I know there is a thread for an April outing, but I am niot sure it has actually gotten out of the planning phase. Also, if you have any outings that you would like to try, feel free to post them. I am sure a few people would be willing to go.
