Rather than just hit the update button a zillion times a day I now refresh my homepage and check the votes cast and overall average vote received. If it goes up 1 vote and 0.0001 its usually a 7, 2 votes and 0.0001 usually 2 6's (or a 7 and 5). If it goes down by 0.0001 it will be a 5 and 0.0002 then I dont refresh the update button lol.

Any other sad peeps do similar?

Those numbers will only be valid for a certain average score (and a certain number of existing votes), from your numbers below I'm estimating an average of 6. If you are averaging 5, then things will be different, for example. Hitting the update and refresh buttons do the same thing, but sometimes it seems that refresh does not update the scores.

The equation to determine what the vote was, given the prior score and count, is pretty simple. The hard part is writing an app that checks the site and computes it for you automatically, and as soon as I've got nothing to do for a couple of hours I'll write it.

Calculating a given vote, assuming you see only a one vote difference between refreshes is pretty simple:

CB = VB * AB
CA = VA * AA
New Vote = CA-CB

VB = votes received BEFORE
AB = average vote BEFORE
CB = calculated total BEFORE

VA = votes received AFTER
AA = average vote AFTER
CA = calculated total AFTER

So, for example, if you had an Average Vote of 6.0000 and a total number of votes of 100, you would calculate it as 600 = 100 * 6.0000. Then, assuming on your next refresh, the average vote changed to 6.0099 you would calculate it as 607 = 101 * 6.0099. Now just subtract 607-600 and you have figured out that the last vote you received was a 7.

Of course, when two or more votes come in at the same time, you won't be able to determine any specific vote. And it becomes even more difficult if someone simply changes their vote, which will change your average without changing the number of votes.

By the way, refreshing your screen does NOT update the vote. It simply refreshes the screen. However, if you set your bookmark for DPChallenge to this URL, then every time you hit this URL it will not only show DPC to you, but it will effectively hit the update button for you in the process:

Mostly correct. It will, however, update after ten minutes past the hour when refreshed.

lol, I never said it was a fool proof method, just some fun and, by refreshing my homepage I get to watch my overall average get ever nearer 5.7500 (am hoping to achieve it in the current challenge).

Why can't that score just update automagically and be displayed on a bid red LED thing accompanied by the theme sound effects from "24"?

On my watch. And my bathroom wall. And the dashboard of my car.

And, in case I'm busy (like driving or working), an alarm set to go off if my score changes by more than .01 (programable of course)
