In the Canon world the gold standard for wildlife is the Canon 100-400 IS.Sadly my budget dosent stretch that far.

I found any thing under 300mm pretty useless for long range, so I bought the sigma 50-500. I find that I mostly use the ends of the lens, 50mm is nice when the action gets very close, but most of the time it stay out near 500.
Mostly i like the fact that it lets you get a lot of differnt types of shots without changing lenses

this was the woman sitting two seats down from me at a base ball game beaing the heat by wearing a hot dog box on her head, next frame was the one of the strike below, tough to beat that versatility.

I think it is fast enough for well lit sport. It will only slightly blur a 90 mph fast ball

If 500mm isnt enough you can add a 1.4 teleconverter to give you and effective 1120mm counting the 1.6 crop sensor, withough losing a ton of detail

Anyway, if you get the 180mm 2.8 you'll have fast glass for rodeos, then get the 2x converter for when you need to go long (image quality will suffer a bit, but you're on a budget).

What about these (if looking for faster 200mm)?

Nikon Zoom Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED AF-D
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Nikon

yup, i was trying to keep the price down and go with a prime as they are generally better with a TC ... but i'm sure they would work

For your budget, look for a used 80-200 2.8, & a third party teleconverter. That should enable you to do both sports & wildlife. Realize you will be manually focusing with the teleconverter though. Not too bad for stationary wildlife, tougher for a moving shot at anything closer than infinity.

okay now my budget is being blown. i'm shooting for under a thousand. My concern with these last two suggestions is that they wouldn't be fast enough for rodeo shots. A lot of rodeo venues don't usually have the best lighting at night.

Why? 80-200 2.8 with 2x would be f5.6, yes? Most teleconverters will still AF to around f8, I thought anyway. I use a 1.4x Tamron (3rd party) teleconverter with some of my Minolta and Sigma lens without any trouble.

It depends on the camera for AF, my Nikon can AF up to f5.6, so with a 3x tele on it, I'm at f8 & it is manual focus. A 2x might be fine, I am not sure because I don't have one. Sorry if I am not much help.

The 70-200 VR is great. I personally think its a bit short for serious wildlife. This is the best shot I've gotten with it Although DPC didn't appreciate it. I'm rather pleased and have sold several copies of it.
