I am sending my 40d back to Canon because I actually think there is a chance that the sensor or highpass filter might have a problem.

The question is.... if I were to tell canon that I used a sensor swab... would that be a problem? My inclination is not to mention it. But I thought maybe there would be people who could tell me Canon expects it and wouldn't really care.

Here is my draft text:

I just purchased a 40d. On the first day of using it I was being VERY careful while changing lenses. Yet when I checked the photos I realized that I had sensor dust. I take a lot of macros using really stopped down apertures, so I need to keep a clean sensor. I first tried the new within-camera cleaning function. That didn’t do anything for me. So next I locked the mirror and blew it out with a bulb blower. That didn’t help either. I repeated the blowing several times. Still having no success, I used a dry sensor swab to clean it. I did not using any cleaning solutions of any sort. That didn’t help even after several attempts (each with a clean swab). The sensor is absolutely filthy and the usual techniques are not cleaning it. I previously owned a 350D and NEVER had any problems cleaning it. So, I am worried that perhaps there is a problem with the sensor or the high pass filterâ€Â¦ possibly some sort of magnetic issue or a problem with the sensor’s film cover or something. I have no idea actually, but want to make sure that my camera has no defects. I just don’t want to end up with a product that can’t be maintained reasonably. I’m hoping that you can actually test it to see if it is attracting and holding onto dust in an unusually tenacious way.

I wouldn't mention it. Just tell them that the sensor is dirty and conventional methods failed to address the problem.

I would leave out the swabbing part, it could give them grounds to void the warranty since they advise against touching the sensor in their manuels. I would leave in the parts about multiple blowing attempts and in camera cleaning with no results. Just my opinion.

Two responses is enough... I must have lost my head for a minute.

How long ago did you purchase the camera? Can you return it to the retailer?

I would dip it in gasoline, set it ablaze, then send it back and tell them it came that way. ;-)

I agree that this method will get you a new camera, though at your own cost:) I think Scarbrd might be on to something. If you got the camera recently and from a decent dealer then you probably could just have them exchange it for a different one. Worth a try anyways.

Yup, agree you should send back to retailer, saying you feel it isn`t fit for purpose and would like a replacement or refund.. Remember, the sales contract was between you and the retailer, not you and Canon.. Take it back and let them deal with Canon whilst you get a new camera.

Interesting. It had not occurred to me to send it back the retailer (B&H). But I think I may wait until after my order of Eclipse E2 liquid comes in. If that doesn't work it is going back ... to someone!
