Just an idea I'm throwing out there:
Would it be helpful if the admins setup a "voting ratio" requirement on this site?
For example: Let's say there's a voting ratio requirement of 0.500, this means that if you have 1000 total votes received from all the challenges you've entered, you should have at least 500 votes cast.
A possible consequence of not meeting the ratio requirement is that you can't join any challenges until you meet the ratio requirement.
This is how most private torrent sites make sure that members also share and just don't leech torrents. In the DPC context, I was thinking that it would encourage (or force [hehe]) more members (including me. lol.) to vote more often on challenges; and, it would also result in the submissions getting more votes.
Of course, as with any concept, there are pros and cons. I'll leave it to other guys to shoot the idea down ^_^ |

I'm of the opinion it is better to offer incentives as a means to encourage an action to take place rather than force someone into that action. Do you really want a bunch of people voting because they have to? Wouldn't that just lead to a lower quality in voting (i.e. more speed voting)?

I believe a voting ratio will dramatically decrease site participation. Most people genuinely don't have the time to vote and come here to have fun. To put restrictions on them wouldn't go down well with the public. And the voting isn't very uniform here. Some challenges get higher voting levels while others don't. It wouldn't be fair on someone consistently entering popular challenges with more than normal activity.
Also, this is site of constant activity. People who are genuinely interested are active week after week. To rehaul the voting system, like that, would imply people are simply uploading pictures in a perpetual contest, forgetting about them and not voting. But that's not the case. Every week people get results, new challenges to shoot and vote for. This cycle keeps things fresh and the voting always keeps on going.

A possible consequence is that you will never again be able to enter a challenge, since a lot of people (thousands) can vote on your image, and you can only vote on the number of entries.
It is only "lately" that the number of votes received runs way below the number of entries -- I think in the "good old days" (and hopefully in the future) there were often more votes than entries.
We ran into this issue when we had a challenge where only people with more comments made than received could enter. I think some people were able to (at least temporarily) block out an entrant by all leaving comments on that person's photos ... |
