| I'm curious.....how many people here use Lightroom for processing? I'm currently using the trial version. It has alot of similar features to PS, and I'm wondering if it's worth the $299 price because of the similarities. Any thoughts?? |

Up until a month ago I was using Bridge and PS. I had been given a copy of Lightroom but had not even installed it. Went to a local photo club meeting where the product manager from Adobe demonstrated Lightroom and went installed it that night and have been using it ever since. It addresses a lot of the issues I had with Bridge. For many photos I do all my processing from RAW to JPEG right in Lightroom, but for some I still need Photoshop. I would say that out of 100 photos I process 90 of them in Lightroom and the remainder in Photoshop.

I use it. I think it's great, mainly because of the ease of batch processing. The batch systems suck in photoshop but in Lightroom you can just paste the saved settings over any number of pictures and then tweak as you see fit.
I'm still learning the ins and outs but overall i think it's great.
I wouldn't pay $299 for it though, that seems a bit steep for just personal use and i'm not sure it's worth that. If you're shooting weddings though, or anything paid with high volume processing i'd say it's a must.

| I heard that Lightroom 2 is in BETA test ... so it might be worth waiting a bit. Either way, if your machine is fast enough and you need it, it is worth it IMO. |

Love it. I love the ease with which I can produce presentable quality images in a short amount of time. I shoot weddings and have to scan thru hundreds of images and quick find the best, apply any corrections and process them in short order. As this task is very "batch oriented", it's much much faster in Lightroom than in Photoshop (ACR+bridge) and tons faster than if I actually used Photoshop to edit the images.
I give it two thumbs up.
By the way, the beta for version 2.0 is downloadable right now. Anyone can try it free for 30 days.

I have a love hate thing with it. I got it for nothing as I bought RSP and got LR as part of the appeasement.
- Do I think it's worth $300 - not unless you have a fast fast machine & can actually use it without the lag those on a "slow" machine have (talking about the lack of response let alone the processing speed). If I used bridge & PS a lot, I would skip it also.
- Do I like the output - Yeah... better then RSP now and better then maybe DPP (The Canon supplied s/ware) in most (not all) places. Otherwise I would give the thing the flick!
- If you use network storage - Give it a big miss. Some people manage to drive it using files in 2 places but not sure how as I always get into trouble trying that - I believe any that do use the sidecar files (too slow for me doing that).
- Do I hate it's "output" methods - Big time... it's physical print centric. v2 looks to move that a little but the concept of printing to an image file is just stupid to me. |
