Hi Guys,
My 580 flash has started to make a funny noise (clicking sound) when it is off the camear when I turn it on, like its looking for a zoom range to set but makes the clicking noise, then stops and flashes that it couldnt find a zoom.
Has anyone delt with this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rich

| Pure speculation here-- Did you make sure the flash head was either straight up or at 90 degrees? I"ve seen a few wierd things happen related to the zoom when the head was positioned between 90 degrees and upright. |

Yes I have tried it at multiple angles and it happened at all of them, but thanks for your input.

| OK, I had a VERY similar problem like that with my Sigma 500 ex super flash, its modelled on the 550, but on a few ocacasions it has exhibited the same symptoms as yours, its like the moving flash head gets kind of stuck and `judders`.. Usually a power cycle fixes it, but has happened on more than one occasion. Not much help I know, but at least you know you are not alone ;-) |

Just to add the answer that I got from canon support on this issue so others may know what is happening if this issue arises for them.
Canon Support
It sounds like the flash's zoom mechanism has is defective.
The flashing display indicates the "Catchlight" at the top of the
display is extended. The display should return to normal when the
Catchlight is returned to its "stowed" position.
I need to send it in for repair sadly. So I am without a flash for a while :(
Thanks to all who posted...
