In a recent challenge someone left a comment on one of my images to the effect that it was dnmc, however it obviously, and I mean 9 other people agreed, did meet the challenge. I took the time to write the poster to let them know that their comments seemed very off-target, and here was their response (paraphrased):

I do my critiques as a school assignment, and since I had to do 59 this time around, I didn't put a dramatic amount of thought int each one. My critiques are generally all along the same compliments or complaints, and i needed a 2 second something to say. If I find the time, I will go back and try to change my comment, but I cant make any promises.

I do not know how they scored my image. However, I wrote them back and asked that if they are voting, to actually take the time and do it right and not in 2 seconds.

I had a similar experience with a recent entry. I got two nearly identical comments within 5 minutes of each other, and the suggestion was not one that I thought would be a common critique. I then looked at the profiles and they both joined on the same date and used the same camera. They also had usernames in a similar vein. I thought it was one person that had registered twice. Turns out this was a classroom effort as well, perhaps the same class as with yourself. Obviously, they either discussed the entries and came to a consensus of opinion, or the second person just parroted the first one in order to get through the task.

I like the idea of DPC being used as a learning aid for a photography class, but it does appear that some of them are plowing through the commenting without a lot of thought. Now we know what happens when commenting is required.

What do you expect? It's just a school assignment. It's not like they're here to learn...

I can see why you're upset. It's pretty crappy when someone goes into voting/commenting with a closed mind. Too bad there's not a way you could inform this persons teacher, because they obviously aren't doing their assignment correctly. If you still send messages to this person, would you mind asking them what they meant by compliments or complaints? I have a hard time wrapping my head around the concept of making complaints on a photo.

I read that comment to possibly mean that the image is quite busy and the pattern difficult to draw out. Just because it's full of patterns doesn't mean it's easy to distinguish...may even make it more challenging to decipher.

As for the title of this thread - aren't you making a rather large assumption? "Low-Scoring Voters?" You have no idea what score that commenter gave you (unless you were tracking it with a spreadsheet). Additionally, that commenter has an avg score given of 6.5088!

Of course I could be assuming and looking at the wrong photo and the wrong commenter...if so, I apologize for my assumption.

Valid points. However, I did put a question mark at the end. I also meant this to refer to another thread a few days ago on the same topic and hopefully draw some of those same commenters in.

What surprises me also is when a voter comments on a picture, saying xxxxxxxxx 8 from me!!! and then gives out a 3..... I have seen this happen a several times when you push update and there is one more vote given... There could always be the simple explanation that at the same moment someone else lowered their score, but - I don´t really think that is the reason.... And no I do not sit by the computer the whole day pressing the update BUT it does happen.... Just a thought!!!

That may also be a different voter, if the commenter does what I do and adds comments later after finishing voting?

To elaborate on one of the points, I too was introduced to DPC in a digital photography class. Although the instructor at the time had no clue how to teach or even operate a camera, it was a more of a mandatory thing to submit images and stuff because she didn't know what else to do.

Regardless to say, those days of irritation because of being forced to do it, and cause I suck at photography I rubbed some people the wrong way and left a bad impression. Then, After taking over a year off, I came back and have tried to play nice with the natives. But if its a school thing, then well... sometimes you just can't argue to win. They don't care, well, most don't. I say let it go and keep on truckin.

Yup, same here. I go back after voting on all entries and try to comment on as many images as I can. I also occasionally change my vote the second time around, usually making it a point higher.

You could be wrong here, I generally score the challenge and then go back and make comments so if I had said a 10 from me and the person voting at that same moment gave you a 1 you could think the same thing. It's rare that I comment and vote at the same time.

Ditto. Most of my comments come later in the process...

Sometimes I will only do comments in a challenge - so if anyone votes about the same time as the comment appears, they will seem to be linked when they are not.

Well - I suppose this could be an explanation although this is happening at the first hours of voting so not that many people are coming back that soon AND I am talking about when people TELL you the vote they give you... I also do this sometimes... vote and come back to comment, but then that is usually much later in the voting period and I don´t say I am giving you an 8 and then I come back in 3 days and give this 8! It would be the other way around... But as I said, I was just wondering :o)
