I had two new submissions tonight.
The 'Warm Color' I spend a good bit of time on, got it just right, polished it up, and thought it would score well. Two votes and averaging 3.5. %#@#$#
The DNMC I rushed it, failed to get the lighting right, and got the submission seconds before the deadline after dwelling if I really wanted the inevitable low score, three votes and averaging 6.3333.

Both of mine are doing poorly right off the bat. (I know my DNMC entry is not great art.) Interestingly, my freestudy started out with a string of better votes than I had really thought it would get. I knew it had poor technicals, though it's a pleasing image. I thought I had an out of the box gem there for a bit and it went down to the mid 5's overnight.
My belief is that the early voters vote quickly and based on quick impressions. The later voters give more consideration to the images and because they take more time, they do not get to the voting as quickly, nor do they vote on as many. This would explain why some images start low and climb once the remaining voters come out over the week. Also explains why my other one started out high and dropped like a stone the next day.

I've got 4 entries in voting right now. Normally my stuff hangs out around 5 to 5.7 but it seems that I'm not the only one who's numbers are lower than usual:
Free Study 2008-03: 4.9636, Votes: 55 (started at 3.0000)
Curves II: 4.3038, Votes: 79 (started at 2.0000)
Cool Colors: 5.6667, Votes: 3 (this one started at 4.0000)
DNMC: 5.0000, Votes: 8 (this one started at 3.0000

My Warm Colors is all over the map.
First 2 votes both 8
3rd and 4th votes both 4
5th through 8th all 7s
9th vote 3
I guess it's a love/hate sort of photo. |
