If you challenge an entry for a suspected rules violation, and you're right, when (if ever) do you find out? Does it just disappear from the voting pool?

I don't think you are personally notified if a picture you suspect and reported and being illegal, is dq'd. It probably just disappears. I've never seen any kind of notification when a pic is dq'd.

Yes, hopefully it just disappears.

This is so:

1) the "illegal" photo doesn't get any further notoriety
2) the photographer is not set up for ridicule about what may be a "mistake" rather than deliberate cheating

Usually if the photo is really good or has been around most of the week someone starts a thread like this about it, and then we are forced to (begrudgingly) disclose some of the above information.

The point of referring DQ requests to the Site Council is specifically so that the general membership is NOT discussing those photos. Your cooperation is appreciated.

NB: This is my own statement made up on the spot, and does not necessarily reflect the official policy of the SC or anyone else.

Well, I didn't start this thread to discuss any particular entry, I simply wondered what happened if a DQ request was successful, in terms of the person who made the request being notified or not. I don't want to discuss anyone's disqualified photograph.

I know that, but thanks. I was mainly posting that for the benefit of the hordes of other users who might check out this thread.

I requested a DQ on an entry in the Point of View challenge. I usually browse through the entries within the first hour after they're posted for voting. I rarely vote on this first hour.... only when there's a photo that really stood out. Anyway, this photo was submitted to another photo submission site (not a contest) months before. I remember him getting loads of positive comments so it indeed fitted the challenge quite well. The DQ request was for not taking the photo within the challenge period and it was caught early. The next time I was going to cast my votes, I noticed the entry was gone. I don't think it was a policy to inform the requester of a dq that it was successful. The photos just disappear. I'm sure there's communication between the submitter of the dq'd photo and dpc admin.

I have received a form of challenge in my comments for a current challenge and I would suggest to that person that they either challenge me formally (I have absolutely nothing to hide) or look at the photo more closely and they'll see how it was done.

I will send him/her a pm after the challenge closes. But I have to say I really didn't apreciate seeing that sort of comment out there for everyone to see whilst voting is going on :(

Actually, no one but you can see the comments on your shot during voting. And that as Martha *used* to say, is a good thing.

Your commenter was wrong to put their reservations about your entry in the form of a comment instead of requesting a DQ. You are following a more honorable path by waiting until the voting is over to reply. Would be nice if everyone could exercise such restraint.

Unless you want the comment to be on view for everyone to see when the voting ends, rude or not, give him/her the chance to retract the comment by explaining the method used,
Paul.

Don't forget that there's always the option of requesting an admin note, which is useful when there's a number of people querying your image without raising DQ requests...

So if there was something done wrong, would the photographer be told what it is he/she did or is it just taken off?

The photographer would be given a chance to upload their original within 48 hours. After that the Council will look at the original and the submitted one. They would then determine if it was done either in the rules or not.
