I was doubting the quality of my new lens this past week. I was shooting in RAW + Basic JPG. I was walking outside but I thought the images were soft and lacking detail when reviewing them on the camera. So I was thinking I needed to return the lens because it wasn't sharp.

I decided to try shooting in RAW only to see if it changed. THe science stopped there because I didn't engage in an experiment. It did appear that there was improvement. I decided to toss the inquiry out to you guys ....

What is the camera previewing when shooting in RAW / RAW+JPG etc. ?

My understanding is that when you shoot in RAW, the camera displays an automatically embedded JPEG because it's not possible to display an actual RAW image on screen. That's whether you shoot just RAW or RAW plus JPEG.

What lens have you got?

Have you tried in-camera sharpening? I've read a lot of D300 users set their sharpening to around 5. Maybe you could try that and see what difference it makes. Unless you prefer to do your sharpening in post processing.
