I have been on a week long trip. Each evening I would copy all my photos onto my laptop and into Lightroom and tag them all.
I'm now back home and want to move all of the photos off of the laptop and onto my primary desktop computer. So my question is how do I do this?
I looked at importing the catalog from my laptop but that looked like it would still point to the files on the laptop and not copy/move them over.
I then tried importing from disk and copied them over to my desktop but it removed all of my keywords.
So how do I do this?

I've never had to do this so don't know if the keywords are preserved or not...
1) export as a catalogue from your laptop lightroom
2) copy the exported catalogue to your desktop
3) import the catalogue to your desktop lightroom |

Thanks.
This raises the question of where does Lightroom put the keywords? I have the option set to write Metadata to the file. Is that just writing it to the .xmp sidecar file instead of the .cr2, .jpg, .dng? I thought it was actually putting the keywords into the metadata for the image. |

Catalog settings:
keywords are not included as part of the metadata.
eta: it appears that keywords can be exported/imported independently of other metatdata
Originally posted by LightRoom Help: Exporting keywords writes the keyword tags to a text file. When you create or edit keyword tags, you can specify whether to include them during the export. When you import keywords from a text file, they become keyword tags in the catalog and appear in the Keyword Tags panel.
In the Library module, do any of the following:
*
To import keywords into the catalog, choose Metadata > Import Keywords, navigate to and select the text file or catalog file containing keywords, and then click Open (Windows) or Choose (Mac OS).
*
To export all exportable keywords from the catalog, choose Metadata > Export keywords, select a location for the keywords file, and then click Save.

Have it export the metadata to .xmp files. Then simply import the files onto your other computer.
I hate being tied to a database. In fact, I regularly blow away my database just so that it doesn't get huge from all of the imports I do. I have Lightroom set to always use .xmp files so my data is useful no matter what computer I am on, and no matter what drive I move it to. I like that kind of freedom. If I could turn the whole database off, I would.

So exporting the catalog on the laptop and importing it on the desktop did what I wanted. It copied all of the ratings, keywords, flags with the photos.
I think I figured out my problem. When I left for my trip I did not have lightroom installed on the laptop. I downloaded the trial version while on my trip when I realized how many photos I was going to have (ended up with 1120 over 6 days). The default value on a new install of Lightroom is to keep all metadata in the catalog and not in the .xmp file. All my other copies of Lightroom I had changed that default.
