Hi
I have never studied Photography Professionally , neither any of my friends are, neither i have the oppurtuinty to be assoicated with any Professionals.

My Problem is that in next 2-4 years i like to do free lance work , specialising in Portraits, Still Photography, Product Photography, Child Portraits.

My Problem is how do i show my work on more professional level to People from Photography Industry , I mean i have heard words like Portfolio ,

I mean it is not as simple as just collecting my best and getting them printed and putting them in a folder and just walking inside office of stock agency or as the case may be .

There would be a different way of Presenting than what i can think of .

So i need to know, are the Photographs of any size to show your work, what kind of Printing .

Should i just focus on fields of my interest or i have to shoot photographs from different fields etc

Some times i do come across photographs of professional, apart from difference in our levels of Photography , what i notice is that if we both to shoot same subject ( there will be huge differenc in our talent level), i find their quality of Printing is bit different, they do tend to touch up their photographs to give that Professional look.

I mean their Photographs have this visible look apart from talent, it is this Standard Operating Procedure Look they have,( which is a result from working as profesional photographer and not just plainly being Photographicly talented than me).

It appears that even if i can raise my talent level to theirs i still will miss out on the final output because , Professional Photographer have this Work Flow which they have devloped which marks their snaps as different from People who are not from this Industry.

It is as if i was part of Photography
industry and after having worked in this Industry only than would i be able to gain knowledge of the Standard Work Flow Or The Standard Operating Procedure of a because of this art they possess where tend

If i knew some one from this field may be i would be what is standard work flow, i mean is it as simple clicking than doing any manupliation in PS as they case requires and than Printing them

Get the best portfolio you can afford - and as big as you can afford. Black leather is best.

High quality prints, 10x8 minimum size should be inserted in to a very clear plastic leaf, and backed on good quality black or white card (getting black card actually black is quite hard I have found)

Also get a new camera; sorry but a 2MP Canon A40 isn't going to get you any commissions I would have thought.

I wouldn't want to use my Nikon for wedding photos or large portraits.

To get your portfolio seen, hound every art director you can find and ask to see him/her in person - chances are you'll be knocked back 99 times out of a 100, so also create a web site and a CD with a PDF / Presentation of your images and post them alongside business cards and your details.

If you think your work is good enough, apply to join stock libraries such as Getty and Corbis.

The best way into the industry or so i am lead to believe is to become a photographers assistant for a good number of years. That involves great stuff like cleaning lenses and making tea.

Best of luck.

I agree with jonpink, I have been working as a professional photographer's full time assistant for the the last 7 months and the ammount I have learnt is UNMEASUREABLE! Being talented and having a good eye is not enough, the important piece of cake is the work flow, the perfection! Sometimes it is hard to understand why we spend 3 hours on a photo of a tomato! But it is true, one has to learn to see and be perfect. In the profession I chose for my futer it is very important. Here is a link www.48art.com to a photographers page I work with, the portfolio of my boss is to be there in a few days too. I am proud to say that a big deal of her work is a big deal of my work too.
A good portfolio is as important as anything, people don't have to see your diplomas and stuff, they want to see you work and how you present it - it is up to you, but be sure, the best presentation gets the job!
Good luck!

Well i have written about fields of my interest , What i had in mind was to create a system where Photogarphy would become self sustaining
Hence my prospective clients would be th small adverstising agencies , Web Devloping companies which need Product Photography ,
Individual for Portrait , Wedding etc .
I may have used word Industry , i meant was if i have to ever show my work yo any professional business enterprise as any other Profssional Photographer would do. how do i go about it

2 mega pixel, i realize it not the best but that is just a hardware issue ,rt which simply means i need to buy something right.
