Sorry about the topic title but I knew all the guys would click here if I put cheerleader in the title. This is actually my attempt at being a cheerleader to boost the average scores.
Avg score from the last 10 open challenges starting with the most recent:
4.949
4.939
5.146
5.029
5.211
5.164
5.278
5.251
5.196
5.221
It̢۪s a pretty distinct downward trend. The last four open challenges average 5.01 while the previous six average 5.22. That may not seem like much, but given the number of voters on each challenge, that̢۪s a very significant difference.
Parallel Lines is a great topic. Lets try to turn this trend around. Parallel lines are lines that always stay the same distance apart. The can curve and they can make sharp turns, they just never get closer or farther apart. There are only about 48 billion photo ops for this challenge in your house alone. This should be a good challenge to get that average back over 5.2. The members are going to start laughing at us if we don't!

Got me there .....
I was just going to post a message titled "slip sliding away".
That is what came to mind looking at my score.
I seem to keep on losing points with every new vote. Sometimes see a 1 hitting me.
Come on, think positive !!!

I can only dream of such things.

I think part of the reason for the low average scores is based on the type of challenges as well. The more the challenge is open to interpretation the lower votes tend to be as people quickly scream the 'dont meet the challenge' chant.
4.949 - silence - open, vague topic with various interpretations
4.939 - conflict - open, vague topic with various interpretations
5.146 - textures - straight forward topic
5.029 - letting go - open, vague topic with various interpreations
5.211 - garage art - straight forward topic
5.164 - zodiac - straight forward with limited subjects
5.278 - road signs - straight forward with obvious subject choices
5.251 - point of view - fairly open, vague topic so the higher score is a deviant pattern!
5.196 - new year's resolution - open, large range, less room for picky
5.221 - tacky holiday deco - where bad was good

Hey! Where's the cheerleaders? I always arrive after the party is over.
I'd be happy if my scores just went consistently over 5.0. |

I predict that "Offscreen Expectation" will continue the lower average score trend. |

Parallel lines should be between 5.1 and 5.2 as it is more of a standard challenge where meeting the challenge or not is more obvious and doesnt rely on too much interpretation.

I don't understand why you think it is desirable to (perhaps artificially) boost the scores. Many members enter the open challenges as well as registered users.
I'd like to know more about how the topics are chosen. I think there may be an effort to keep the number of entries down to what is perceived as a more manageable level because of the complaints when we have large challenges; and that this results in topic selections that yield lower average scores. |

When topics are suggested in the forums, we add them to a huge database, and then every week 2 topics are picked at random.

TY Ben. Not the info I expected. Is that locked in? There ought to be a better way than simple random selection. |

I do not believe I encouraged or condoned raising the average score through artifical means (i.e. voting higher). I believe I was trying to encourage better photography. Do you want me to explain why it would be nice to see the photography get better and the average scores go up? |

I think your original post was deceptive starting with the title. Could it be you wanted to be able to say you are encouraging better photography but really wanted to subtlely influence voters to raise their scores? What is the point of saying "The members are going to start laughing at us if we don't!"? Who is the "us" in that sentence? |

I assure you I in no way was suggesting anyone artificially vote higher just to raise the average. That would be just plain stupid. Look at my voting average. I'm a tough voter compared to most. My voting is below the averages. I'd have to be really dumb to encourage others to do something I don't or wouldn't do.
As for why I'd like to see the quality raised? Why not? I'd much rather give out a lot of high scores and good comments then low scores and negative comments.
JUST TO CLARIFY, A NOTE TO ALL: DO NOT ARTIFICALLY VOTE HIGHER ON ANY PICTURE BASED ON ANYTHING I HAVE SAID |

Thanks for the clarification louddog but I never for one moment thought you were trying to artificially raise the average - I was under the impression you were after photographers to try and 'up' their quality and that parallel lines would be a challenge where people would 'hopefully' include parallel lines in the shot??
"does not meet the challenge" will hopefully not be a comment I post.
