But I would like your opinion. If you ignore the background (or lack there of) I do belive that I have captured the curiosity of a 5 month old child. Everything is so new and exciting. What do you think?

Well, she definatley at least looks stunned. Her whole body language is involved (hands down by her side).

However, it is not an expression that would captivate me for the challenge. I know you said to ignore the background, but to consider it as a whole, I am sorry that I cannot. Placing a blanket behind her would be far better than capturing the busy background that you have here.
Also, the white balance is off.
She's a cutie. Photograph her some more.. get some more animated responses from her, and I think you'll see you'll enjoy them much more. :)

I was about to comment but Karen seems to have developed mind-reading capabilities and has already expressed just exactly what I was thinking.

She is a beautiful little girl, btw.

I agree with heida...hehe...

But seriously, i also do agree with Karen and Kavey, but to add, even without the blanket, you could have cropped it more tightly, getting rid of the unneeded background. : )

White balance is unnatural (hard on red and yellow)and the zoom is wide (everything in focus)does not separate the subject from the busy background!

The sparkling highlights in the eyes makes the shot. Portrait photography is all about the eyes.
