My son-in-law is looking for a P/S for my daughter that has a short shutter lag. He is looking for something under $200.
Any suggestions? |

Pocket size? I have a Nikon Coolpix L6 that I like. Not a lot of manual control, mostly scene modes. The Coolpix L11 is the current similar model and can be found on clearance now for under $100.
If she wants something more capable, the Fuji Finepix S700/5700 can be found for $200 or less, but it's not exactly pocket sized.

Short shutter lag and cheap don't necessarily go together. It depends on your definition of 'short'.
Best thing is to decide on the features you want (other than short shutter lag), find the camera's that meet those criteria and then try them all. |

actually, it depends on his/her definition of "short" My def. is "Canon 1D MKII". They have a Fuji (not sure of model) and are tired of missing "the moment" with their 1 year-old. I don't have any experience with the lower end P/S's, but I have a feeling that there are some tricks like prefocusing that may help minimize shutter lag generally for them.
He hopes to buy at costco for easy return if needed. Right now they have a Canon Powershot SD 1000 at $199 w/$30 rebate and free 2meg SD, and the reviews say fairly short shutter lag. It has most of the standard features for its class, so that's probably the way they will go, unless something negative comes up or a better option appears. |

| you'll be hard pressed to find something under $200, though i would suggest finding a gently-used previous model canon G-series camera. they have always had relatively good shutter-lag as far as p&s go. |

If it's an S2000, almost anything currently on the market will have a shorter shutter lag. I used to have one of those, and other than the shutter lag, I really liked it. But when I took pics of jumping horses (which I do often), I would have to estimate the number of strides the horse would take before the jump that were equal to the lag, and then click that early. I believe the lag is nearly 2 full seconds (I think I heard 1.8 or something like that).
I have another Fuji now, and as long as the batteries are fresh, my shutter lag is nearly unnoticeable. Of course, prefocusing helps, especially in dark/natural light conditions.
I think if you can find something that has contiuous auto focus or a pre-focus option that will help a lot. Otherwise, the focus will take even longer than the shutter lag - I learned that the hard way w/ my sister's 1 y/o twins at Christmas. lol |
