First off this is not intended to be a thread to discuss anything political. I went to a protest in front of John McCains office on the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. I heard on a local radio station that it was going on, and I figured it was a good chance to try a different type of photography than I usually try. I had a lot of fun and I took over 400 pictures in all. Here are the best shots that I took:

They are very minimally processed, just auto mostly because I was doing like 50 at once. I would love some feedback mostly on composition and lighting. This was my first attempt at photojournalism so ANY feedback is much appreciated. Again this is not a thread to talk about the war or anything political. If you feel the need (I don't care which side you are on) to talk about the war or anything other than these photos please create a thread of your own.

I think they are well done as well, hope you can post some more. The guy in the third photo that is Louddog's friend looks just like the poker player Chris "Jesus" Ferguson. |

To me they are not tight enough.... too much background that does not fit. That hotel sign does not do it for me (I understand you are trying to show context with McCain but maybe just with a poster & the sign without the background). I think that last one had the best potential but without the other photg & road... I know you would get run over but further out to get less angle would have helped... besides, they prob will not run over you right away :-)

I don't think you captured any anger or deep feeling which is the essence of protest.
This gentleman is showing a little something but he's slightly out of focus which doesn't matter to me but he seems to be the only guy in the set of images giving anything. The technical side of the image wouldn't matter if you'd captured some serious, undeniable rage.
I may have chosen different angles to shoot from to show or enhance as much of the emotion at this rally as I could.

No one has the balls they had in the 60s when the Vietnam War was happening. And that crowd certainly does not look all up in arms and ready to take on The System either. Just a comment on the pitiful state of the world... ;-) |
