My Silence entry was doing about 5.0, before the thread on "suicide, etc." started to get alot of steam. I ended with a 4.89 (very pretty Bell curve on the results though). I DO think that topics and these sort of discussions do sway some people, either consciously or subconsciously, but how much? who knows. Some people are sheep, if you can't vote how YOU FEEL or LIKE then you shouldn't vote at all. Having preconcieved ideas and not looking at something from anothers view is how it goes around here, it seems. Play to the masses ideas and you will win and be accepted.

Too right. Ha ha! I think in the end that it's how the picture is composed etc and whether it fits the challenge in it's own right is how the pics should be judged. Not whether it's a cliche. For example there were 3 golfballs (I think) in the textues II challenge and I didn't let that stop me voting for the one that I thought was excellent with a high mark. So.....

.....go for it with the power lines!

You don't HAVE to take pictures of powerlines. They seem to just jump into my pictures all the time (C:

But rail road tracks are still parallel .
Just because the perspective makes them look like they are converging, doesn't make them so.

Vote on composition, lighting, exposure, DOF, angle taken, impact and all the things that make a photo have impact and that WOW factor. So what if you don't like children or pet photos or you're sick of flower photos. If you ever decide to make money with your photography...this might well be the area that makes you the cash. Not saying others won't do that for you...but weddings, senior photos, prom photos, baseball teams, football games all include people and make you money. Just try to be open and not worry over cliches. Just try to open up to the photo and look for leading lines and things that draw your eye in. If there's nothing there then vote it as such.
Vote on the photo through someone elses vision and see how that works out :)

I never worry about posting clichéd shots otherwise I wouldn't have entered a picture of my daughter for the Silence challenge. I knew going in that some people were going vote it down just because of the subject matter; that's just the way it is around here; gotta please yourself first. :)

IMHO, you went far beyond cliché with that shot; one of my favorites in the challenge. If voters don't look beyond their preconceptions, they'll miss a lot.

Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. :0)

"Photograph a subject where parallel lines provide or strengthen the composition of the image."

I'll give it a shot. Your shot should make good use of two or more features (e.g. railroad tracks, powerlines, tree trunks) that are pointing in the same direction (as opposed to a "V" shape or crossing lines). These are the composition or in some way make the photo stronger. You could shoot railroad tracks because in "real life" they never touch each other -- they remain equi-distant.

To get very literal - a line is the shortest distance between two points and is, therefore, straight. As we all know, railroad tracks can curve. To many folks the more literal the better the match to the theme.

To get less literal - many elements are parallel without being linear or equi-distant (e.g. parallel universes - if one could shoot them) and to many folks, this would be a good use of the theme.

hallizh, here is an example of the "railroad" idea that people have mentioned -- my entry in the Infinity challenge:

The horizontal railroad ties themselves are parallel to each other; the rails themselves are also parallel, but due to perspective, they appear to converge to infinity. Whether or not this would be a good picture for the "parallel" challenge is another matter...

I'm gonna be picky and say railroads are parallel objects, but the composition of the photo doesnt show parallel lines. Since the challenge says "where parallel lines provide or strengthen the composition of the image" I would say railroads don't fit the challenge.

edit: After reading Eddy's post I thought I'd correct myself. The wooden parts of the track are indeed parallel in the image, but I still don't think they play any part in the composition.

They could title it 'parallel lines converge':}
03/10/2004 03:43:24 PM · #37
I think it depends on whether each individual voters enterprets it as:

Parallel Lines
or
Parallel Objects

In the first case I think the lines should be parallel as seen in the photo. In the second, railway tracks would be fine as they are parallel in reality. I tend to lean towards the first option personally, as that is the name (and description) of the challenge :)

This was my same question with the challenge.

I think the subject that is photographed shouldn't be an issue, but the way it is caught composed light angle expression and everything. Personaly I don't care if powerlines for example are considered clichee by many of you if someone catches my eyes with them that's a succesful shot and I really don't care what it's about.
I think threads like this are unhelpful and not good because it really may affect some of our unprofesional always wondering is my shot a good one or not, from maybe submiting a shot that is great for such a stupid reason.

Predictions for Parallel Lines

I predict lots of railroad lines, lots of frames, linear photos, architecture and the sorts.

Hope not, why are most of the pics interpreted so boringly?????

Not trying to get into an arguement here and sorry if I set myself up for one.

I wasn't trying to imply that these entries would be boring (although some might be) or that I'm being sarcastic. I was trying to get some ideas and thinking going, which I see is now happening. I'm sorry if I seemed that way.

I believe in voting for photos fairly, and like what people have been saying, if you can win the challenge with power lines, go for it.

As for my person winning ribbons, I try the best I can with what I have got. Winning is not as important as the effort that you put into the photo, as well as how much you learn out of it.

Interesting discussion on whether converging parallel lines are still parallel. I wasn't really looking for an answer, since I know all too well that there will always be people on each side of the fence.

Case in point... my entry for silence was one of several that showed a pin drop. The photo itself wasn't all that exciting (so I shouldn't have expected to score any higher), but I was very amused at the range of comments. Some commenters stated that I hadn't expressed Silence because you could hear the pin, while others accepted that you could ONLY hear the pin if it WAS silent. On the same image, some voters liked the [intentional] movement on the pin, but others suggested a faster shutter speed to stop the action.

Discussions like this on interpreting a Challenge are probably more likely to confuse or stifle creativity than actually generate ideas. The bottom line is that opinions vary and all you can do is follow your own interpretation of a Challenge and take the best darn shot you can for it. The Pin Drop was my lowest score yet, but I got some good insight for future direction and both of my current submissions are scoring over 6. :-D

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Parallel Lines by Blondie, but I expect you are all too young to remember.

I'm tempted to re-photograph my "From Above" challenge entry Above the track just to see if I get a similar score. (has anyone tried this and if you have, what was the outcome?)

I'm torn between one semi cliche' shot, and trying to 'explore' into a three dimensional parallel type thing.

Oh [b]NO!/b] It said parallel lines? Mine go all skew-wiff like a V shape. Poop. Ah well, we'll see how it goes. Mine isn't a railway or architecture shot incidently. It's got a bird in it. Not normally in for the whole animal photography thing but...

I quite enjoy reading the 'pre' challenge threads its a good place to learn and maybe get ideas. I've been thinking about an idea for a couple of days but am not really sure if I should go for it or plump for the 'safer' obvious parallel picture. This will be my 3rd challenge and hope to keep the upward trend (not hard on past results).

It was entertaining to read through all this while I was comtemplating how to tackle my first entry. Now it's done & submitted & I have to wait HOW LONG?? Patience is not my strong suit...lol
Looking forward to seeing how it goes the first time out.
Oh well, I'll be here waiting...and waiting...and waiting ;)
