So, I have some free, non-standard font that I like for my letterhead. I created a word document of a price list, and then I created a PDF (using Acrobat 7.0 Standard) hoping I could email an un-editable document to customers. Everything went fine (I guess) until I opened the PDF on another computer and the letterhead font was all funky. I then realized my customers would have to have that specific font downloaded to their computer to view the file the way I designed it.

Is there a way for me to freeze that section...make it not "type"...more of an image so it would show up on any computer opening the PDF? Also, is my PDF editable by someone else if they have an Acrobat Standard program (do I need to lock it...somehow)?

Thanks! As you can see, I'm not too familiar with this program.

If by "Acrobat Standard" you mean the free Reader software then they probably won't be able to edit anything. If you want to protect the document, fo SaveAs and check the button for security options in the dialog -- if you don;t have that button, then you don;t have the full version either.

For a fancy font, set the type in Photoshop, save it as a TIFF, and then place that in your Word document.

You can either take the PS route that Paul suggests, or look for the option in in Acrobat to embed fonts in the document. That will make the document bigger, but all the required font information will be there. I don't have access to Acrobat at this time, and I don't recall where that option is located, but almost certain it exists. Hopefully someone with better knowledge of Acrobat will chime in.

The font embedding preferences are in differnt locations depending on whether you're using Acobat, Acrobat Distiller, or a plug-in option as is I think the case here.

The font embedding option shows up at whatever point you create the PDF file. "Embed all fonts" it is called.

Some fonts cannot be embedded by Acrobat due to licensing restrictions.

I looked on my computer found: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0 which contains the following folders Acrobat, Acrobat Elements, ActiveX, Designer 7.0, Distillr, Esl, PDFMaker and then some misc. setup and resource folders. From these I use Acrobat. Maybe this is just a reader program, but I have never been able to create PDFs from Word documents with previous versions. I installed this version because we use it on our work computers and I do some work from home.

I will play around a little bit and maybe have to go the route of creating a TIFF and using it as my letterhead. I am not seeing the save preferences that GeneralE mentioned before, but will search for the document embedding and see if I can find a way to do that.

I did find that I have the following option, listed just below Save and Save As:
Save as Certified Document
âYou are about to create a Certified document. By certifying a document you vouch for its contents and enable recipients to verify that the document came from you. Certifying a document also adds tamper-resistance to detect and prevent unwanted changes.
In order to certify a document, you need to have a Digital ID. If you intend to distribute this document to a large audience, it is suggested that you use a Digital ID from one of Adobeâs partners. This will allow any recipient with Acrobat or Adobe Reader to automatically verify the certification.â

Maybe I will try this too. It is hard to tell, though as I have the same program at both work and homeâ¦I will have to try out my efforts on the neighborâs laptop I guess.

Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction!
