ETA: Actually I misunderstood the post I replied to. I thought it originally said the fence had to be the subject and you said that was correct. My bad. As I said in my very first post the description didn't say the fence had to be the main subject.

Well, that is better than trying to meet a few people's made up or misunderstood challenge descriptions. ;) |
It is only your opinion that people are misunderstanding the challenge description.
Not everyone is going to interpret descriptions the same, our opinion differs. So if I misunderstood the description it certainly hasn̢۪t effected my scoring.

It's funny that we only brought up this challenge... IT'S EVERY CHALLENGE. The voters here have gone crazy. I have 1 picture on 2 sites both currently in voting and on this site it's a 5.6 on the other site I am at 7.
I think the people here expect something and when they don't see it they give you a 3 or 4. People here are handing out the wrong scores all together I don't care what anyone says.

It's not that they're handing out the wrong scores. It's just that they're a bunch of picky bastages. ;-D

Heck, I think the word "features" is easy to misinterpret (or just interpret multiple ways) -
In some contexts, it could mean the star of the show ("Featuring Slippy as Hamlet" lol) or it could mean merely includes (the living room features red velvet drapes and a navajo rug), but I took it to be somwhere in between in this case: There's a fence in the shot and it's noticeable for some reason. Sometimes it's noticeable because it's the subject, sometimes a framing element (on one or more sides), sometimes a prop for the main subject, even a leading line element. Any of these meets the challenge for me. But if it just happens to be in the shot, I'm tempted to vote lower.
In my case the fence (and there's just one) is both the subject and a framing element. But the score is still not doing well - and seems to go lower every time I update.

Nothing recent about that. It's been that way for the entire time I've been on DPC.

They are very picky here. I too have the same shot on two different sites. Here it is doing a 5.8, there it is doing a 7.87. Go figure. Of course I did use advanced editing on the other one, and it is also 2 times the pixels of dp, and blah blah blah. Anyway, I enjoyed thoroughly shooting for this challenge. I looked at fences all week, got so many neat shots, walked a few to see where they went, introduced myself to some animals caged behind the fences and made a few friends with them, and feel that the shot I submitted is worth doing a print on. All who I have shown it too, including my husband who is my worse critic, love the shot and say it is very pretty. That said, I know my fence is lovely, and it will be going on my wall as a 13 by 19 print. |

What is this other site? They are currently running the same theme challenge? |

Well until this challenge is over I am not going to name the other site because I don't want to flood the site and have people find out mine and others pictures but yes they kind of run the same stuff. The other challenge was called fences but it was a challenge I could use the picture in. By the way I finished with a 7.000 even and took 2nd place. 5.71 here.

The subject of the other site I go to is not fences, but the shot applied to both. I cannot share the site till after this challenge. Can't have people looking. There are many sites that run similar contests, and some that even run contests for money. I am sure they all look at each other for ideas for subjects and themes. Often the same subject that appears in dp will appear 2 weeks later at the other site, or viceversa. It is just a way to feel a bit better about yourself. I have already placed in the top three over 20 times on the other site, and on another site I frequented I placed in the top 5%, which is very good for that site. Not here, never here, I will die before I ever win a ribbon here, but I will continue to play.

I took the wording "features a fence" to mean it's a main element of the picture but not necessarily the subject. What does everyone think? |
What about railings? I see a lot of railing shots in this challenge. Are they close enough to fences to match the category? I see them as quite different. What's everyone else's interpretation?
P.S. I'd love to find out what those other websites are after this challenge! |

In the most generic terms, a railing is a form of fence. To me anyway. |
