Do you think it was a wise decision not to post these pictures or should freedom of speech allow me to do so with no recourse. A fence stood between us with a sign saying "Restricted Area".

It sounds like you took pictures of a federal prisoner transfer. I wouldn't worry about it too much. There are no laws restricting the use of photography in public areas. If you were outside the fence in a publicly accessible area you don't have anything to worry about. The way there might be a problem is if there were notices posted restricting the use of cameras.
