I know, I know there is a hundred of these first thoughts on the interweb right now... But, I just have to share my findings! ( geez, I hope no one hates me now :( )
Nikon 16-85mm vr VS Nikon 18-55mm dx ED II
this should be a no brainer for most people so I will skip this one.
Nikon 16-85mm VR VS Nikon 17-55mm 2.8*
Pros (of the 16-85mm VR)
Better contrast
Better color
much better edge to edge sharpness and just much sharper!( it makes the Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 seem like a joke at all apertures)
has VR
Longer focal range
Cons
not a wide aperture F3.5 widest
not as good build (though it is best built compared to all other consumer grade Nikkors)
lens hood is a joke
barrel distortions
and the lens extends a bit a the longer end
Other notes
no zoom creep
solid build ( yes it surprised me a bit)
has a sealed metal mount
sharp sharp sharp!
*Yes, I do realize that I am comparing a $1,200 pro glass against $650 consumer glass!
This maybe my next lens, I will need to just get over on thing that could annoy the heck out of some people!

| I've heard great things about the optical quality so far... but 5.6 @ 85mm is a real killer. For that money, I'd take the tammy 17-50 2.8 and a Nikkor 85 1.8, anyday. |

Although I'm new to Nikon and DSLR I think you summed up the 16-85 pretty well. I got this lens as walk around with my D80 instead of a kit. I find it very solid and sharp.

I agree...This lens is very expensive for what it really is. Also quite slow at the longest focal length.

So far I'm really impressed with mine, but I would have rather deal with a little zoom creep than the overly stiff zoom. I had even thought about returning it until I tested two others and both were as stiff. I guess Nikon didn't want to hear all the bitching that they received on the similarly designed 18-200 VR.

the "bokeh" can sometimes be a thing to watch out for.
Did I mention this lens is sharp ShArP SHARP!

| Going backpacking this weekend and taking only the 16-85 and a macro, so it will be a true test of the lens for me. |
