After the recent poll on deleting comments and all the input into the various threads I could see both sides of the argument so I have thinking on it for awhile.
This is a bit hard for me to explain but what I would like to see....is someway of being able to respond to comments you receive on challenge entries without sending a PM to the person commenting which can be seen as trying to influence how someone votes.
I know you can respond after the challenge by leaving comments in the comment section of your own entry but this clutters the comments section and I would like to respond to comments as I receive them, not after the challenge. I usually never go back to look at comments after the challenge, maybe only to see who the bagheads were.
I know you can also respond before or after a challenge in the details section under the photo but this doesn’t address individual comments made.
Sometimes you receive comments that are plainly wrong and can be from beginners who don’t know better! so this becomes more of an education tool as well as the photographer’s right of a response.
The idea I have is for another tick box next to the one that says “This comment was helpful” which simply says “Photographer has responded” if you then ticked this box it would open up another comment box where you as the photographer could respond to the comment that has been made.
If your still with me this is where it gets interestingâ€Â¦Ă˘€Â¦.Once you have responded to a comment it would only be visible to you, this allows for your identity to remain anonymous whilst the challenge is still being run. Once the challenge is over your comments would show up under the original comment but possibly within the original comment box.
Meanwhile on your Profile page (under statistics ) you would have a “responses” stat link which would show when someone has responded to your comment and the number of responses so you can keep track of them but I’m not sure if this should be visible to everyone. If you see someone has responded to your comment it would encourage people to go back and look at images after the challenge has finished and to see what the photographer thought of your comment.
The suggestion is not just for negative responses it could be used to thank people for commenting and pointing out something etc.
I think this would allow for more discussion on individual challenge entries and help us all learn more from each other.

While interesting, this suggestion falls flat in its lack of simplicity.

How about if it could be coded so that you could respond in the thread in the usual way, in sequence and/or by quoting, but your response would remain hidden until after the voting was completed? Then, when people review the discussion thread, it might look more like a discussion. |

Yes, thats the type of thing I was thinking about but also to have the person who made the original comment notified in someway. |
