When a player is dropped from a team, he first goes to "waivers," sort of a holding area. Any team (even the team that dropped him) can put in a claim for him, but no one will be able to pick him up until he comes off waivers two days after he's dropped. The claiming team with the lowest waiver order number will get him. If a player passes through waivers without anyone claiming him, he goes into the free agent pool. Any team can pick up any player from the FA pool at any time; the roster move is immediate (though if it's late in the day, you may not be able to start him until tomorrow). To pick up a player, you must drop a player or put a player on the real DL onto your DL to make space. Just remember that there are some players you can't cut.
As far as minor leaguers, if Yahoo has them available, you can roster them, even if they're still in the minors. Just remember you only have five bench slots. Once they're promoted to the majors, you can pick them up just like any other free agent. Odds are, though, if he's a hot prospect, Yahoo already has him available even as a minor leaguer. Take a look at Jarrod Saltalamacchia of TEX - you'll see the red "NA" next to his name, which means he's not on an active major league roster right now, but you can still draft him or add him.

So once the draft is over and the season begins - in order to pick up any player, whether dropped from another team , brought up from the minors, or simply available - I would have to be "first in line" with a claim? Is that what you mean by "Lowest waiver order number?" or is that based on team standings of some sort? I assume that I wouldn't have to determine who to drop from the roster until I have approval to aquire the new player? I understand that players can also be changed up during the season with trade. Sorry for so many questions!
Thanks! |
Players are on waivers only for the first two days after they're dropped. Once they "pass through" waivers, they become free agents and anyone can pick them up immediately. We'll all be assigned waiver order numbers after the draft. We start off in reverse order of the draft. So if you get the first pick in the draft, you'll have the worst waiver number (16), and vice versa. Once you successfully use a waiver pick, you go back to the end of the line (16) and everyone behind you moves up a spot.
Yahoo requires you to drop a player at the same time you add one (unless you have an empty roster spot). IIRC, when you try to add a player, Yahoo will take you to another page that will require you to pick a player to drop. If you're picking up a free agent, the roster move will happen immediately; if you have to wait for waivers, the move goes on hold until the player comes off waivers. If you have the best waiver number, you'll get him and the other player will be dropped, but if someone with a better number than yours staked a claim, then that team will get the player and your move won't happen at all.
Trading is a whole 'nother animal. |

Me. I've ranked a few pitchers... I'm gonna let Yahoo do the rest. I'm over my head here, relying on plain stoopid luck...

There are just so many players! I have a few lists made up and I have a few personal favorite players I'd like to have. I sure wish I had tickets for Opening Day. I went and spent my money on camera equipment...imagine that. :)

I'm with ya Bear. When ever I rearrange the rankings or do a live draft, I have a horrible season. I'm leaving it on autopilot. Doesn't mean I'll have a good season, but I just won't be as mad at myself if it turns bad.

So we go to the league page to do the draft? I hope it's pretty easy to figure out how to find and choose a player. I'm assuming they'll have a list of some kind of all eligable players? I also assume that as players get drafted, they will no longer be on the list. I assume a lot :) |

btw...
it seems that the games start next week. I guess our draft was late enough that we got bumped back a week.

It would be cool to have a list here of all the players - so I (we) can associate DPC member with DCP Baseball team.
I just changed my team name from howzit to "The Cubs" to compete with "The Yanks" (LOL).
I'll start here - if everyone wants to PM me or just post here - I'll update the list.

howzit = The Cubs |

Actually - I think we start on Monday. When you go to today (Sunday, Mar 30) - no players show, but when you click Mon, March 31, you can adjust your team. |

How do I put someone on the DL? It put them on the bench?
Also.. Do pitchers always get points or do I have to choose one starting pitcher and how do I do that? I am totally lost.
And if I put someone on the DL now, will I have to wait until the waivers period is over to bring someone else in?

I totally screwed up. Didn't realize I had so many players on the DL.

There is no DL for us - you just bench them. The little ^ next to a pitchers name represents they are playing/starting. |

Ok....humor me here please.
Do we have to pick a starting lineup somewhere or do our players gain stats if they play at any time in real games (including our bench players?) If we have to take players off of the bench to "activate" them, how do we do that?
And then do I understand that any pitcher (starting or relief) gains stats at any time when they play a real game? |

Any player that is not on the bench will add to your points if he is playing. It is up to us to watch each day and move players around so they are active the day they play. This applies to pitchers too - if they are active (meaning they are not benched) and they are playing that day, any stats they accumulate will be added to our scores. |

I cannot figure out how to take a player off of the bench and place him in the line up. I see the button for "edit lineup" but I can't figure out how to switch them.

I have a question - how come my little user icon on the left represent a registered user and no a member - I still have three days left until it expires. Weird.
Glad you figured it out - I haven't got there yet - getting ready for work tomorrow. :) |
