Hi all...I need to upgrade an older computer with probably an AGP 1.0 slot. I have been told that most of the current AGP cards on the market will create problems as they are for AGP 2.0 and 3.0.

What I would like to know is, if I only use the computer for still photography editing, and don't use it for 3D games, would I get equal performance getting a PCI vid card with more RAM than an AGP with less RAM? Would you remcommend getting the PCI card or should I just upgrade the motherboard (more expensive because I have to purchase a new CPU and DDR RAM)?

Thanks...Olyuzi

personally, I'd just get a PCI card. You should be fine for what it sounds like you are going to be using it for.

i second that, but get one with the highest memory you can in a PCI card...

If all you want to do is edit photos, stick with your current motherboard, and get a good PCI video card, any 64 Meg or above would do. If you want to do anything else with the computer or even upgrade to Windows XP you should consider either building a new machine or picking up a new machine at Best Buy or something for like $400.

i would highly recommend NOT buying a $400 machine from anywhere unless you build it yourself.

if its a pentium2 or better - a pci card should be fine
if its older its time to upgrade

You'd do just fine with a PCI Card. You really won't need the processing power that comes from most AGP cards. I have an AGP card, but I also do video editing and gaming, but for potography, a PCI will be just fine, try to get a card with more Memory though. Yeah, if older than Pentium 2, time for a new machine, otherwise you're fine.

Thanks all very much. Just the info I wanted to know.
And just to let you know, I did purchase a PCI vid card with 128 MB RAM. I'm currently using a 16MB old TNT card that just doesn't cut it.
I'll install the new one tomorrow.
Thanks again...Oly
